Chapter 10 - The Siege of Ridge Road

The heavy thrum of twin turbine engines shook the pine trees surrounding the cabin, creating a deafening roar that made the window glass vibrate. Clara crouched low on the floor of the reinforced nursery, clutching Maya tightly to her chest while the infant stirred fretfully in her sleep.
From the basement command center below, the muffled pop-pop-pop of a silenced firearm echoed through the floorboards.
Adrenaline surged through Clara’s veins. She didn't know what was happening downstairs, but she knew one terrifying truth: if Luka fell, she and her daughter had zero chance of survival.
She laid Maya gently in her crib, pulling the protective canopy down, and crept on hands and knees out into the main hallway toward the top of the basement stairs.
Peering down into the illuminated command center, she saw Luka standing by the main console, calmly reloading his pistol while staring at a multi-screen security feed. On the monitors, four operatives in full tactical gear were fast-roping from a black twin-engine helicopter hovering just above the clearing in front of the cabin.
“Luka!” Clara called out in a sharp whisper.
He looked up instantly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “I told you to stay in the core!”
“I’m not hiding while you fight them alone!” Clara retorted, her voice trembling but resolute. She pointed to a heavy steel lockbox bolted to the wall beside the basement door. “What’s in there?”
Luka’s jaw tightened. He walked over, punched a four-digit code into the digital keypad, and popped the lid open. Inside sat a compact submachine gun and several spare magazines.
“Can you handle a firearm?” Luka asked, eyeing her with sharp scrutiny.
“My father taught me how to shoot targets in the quarry when I was sixteen,” Clara said coldly, stepping down the stairs and reaching out her hand. “Give me the weapon.”
Luka didn't hesitate. He handed her the submachine gun, checking the chamber and ensuring the safety was disengaged before nodding grimly. “They’re coming through the front porch. Hold the center corridor. I’ll flank them through the utility tunnel.”
Before Clara could reply, the heavy oak front door of the cabin exploded inward with a deafening crash of splintering timber and iron bolts.
Smoke grenades hissed as they rolled across the living room floor, filling the cabin with thick, choking white fog.
Clara dropped to one knee behind the heavy oak dining table, raising the barrel of the submachine gun toward the doorway through the swirling smoke. Her hands shook violently, but the training from her youth kicked in, anchoring her fear into cold, precise focus.
Through the white haze, two tactical operatives stepped into the living room, their assault rifles raised, scanning the corners for targets.
“Clear!” one shouted through his respirator.
Clara took a slow, steady breath.
Clack-clack-clack.
She squeezed the trigger. The submachine gun bucked sharply against her shoulder, spitting a burst of suppressed rounds into the hardwood floor just in front of the operatives' boots.
The startled operatives dove for cover behind the sofa, shouting in surprise.
“Contact! Multiple tangos in the interior!”
Before they could return fire, a blur of dark motion erupted from the hallway utility hatch behind them. Luka Moretti materialized from the shadows like an avenging angel, his pistol flashing twice with silent, lethal efficiency.
Both operatives slumped sideways, neutralized before they even realized they were flanked.
“Good shot,” Luka muttered, jogging over to Clara as the rotor noise outside began to shift. He looked up at the ceiling speakers where the cabin’s external cameras projected audio.

The helicopter outside was shifting position, preparing to deploy a secondary extraction team directly onto the roof.
“They’re trying to drop through the skylight,” Luka said, grabbing Clara by the arm and pulling her toward the basement stairs. “We have thirty seconds before this cabin becomes a tomb. Move!”
