Chapter 12 - The Fall of Julian Sterling

-12-
The grand ballroom of the Grandview Hotel in downtown Columbus was a glittering sea of black-tie elegance, crystal chandeliers, and expensive champagne. Over four hundred of Ohio’s most prominent attorneys, judges, corporate executives, and politicians sat at round tables draped in white linen, applauding politely as the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium.
“And now, ladies and gentlemen,” the MC boomed into the microphone with theatrical flourish, “it is my absolute honor to present the Columbus Bar Association’s 2026 ‘Lawyer of the Year’ award to a man whose legal brilliance, philanthropic vision, and unwavering dedication to justice have shaped the very pillars of our corporate landscape... please give a resounding round of applause to Mr. Julian Sterling!”
Polished applause swelled through the ballroom.
Julian Sterling, impeccably dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, stood up from his table near the front. He smiled modestly, adjusting his cuffs, basking in the adoration of the elite class he had spent his entire career manipulating. He kissed his mistress—who sat disguised among the junior partners—on the cheek, and began walking gracefully toward the stage.
He had won.
Clara and that dangerous fugitive were out of the picture. The hospital records were purged. The M-17 genome was secured through emergency surrogate filings currently sitting on a judge’s desk. By tomorrow morning, Julian would be untouchable.
He stepped up the mahogany stairs to the stage, shaking hands with the association president, and stepped up to the podium as the applause reached a crescendo.
He raised his hand to quiet the room.
“Thank you,” Julian began, his voice smooth and resonant through the high-end sound system. “Thank you for this incredible honor. In our profession, we often deal with difficult choices—sacrifices required to maintain the stability of the institutions we serve—”
Suddenly, every television monitor mounted around the perimeter of the grand ballroom flickered simultaneously.
The cheerful corporate slideshow promoting the Bar Association vanished.
Replaced by a stark, black screen bearing a single white crest: PROJECT JANUS - MASTER LEDGER.
A murmur of confusion rippled through the audience.
Julian frowned, pausing his speech, looking over his shoulder toward the A/V tech booth at the back of the room. The technicians were frantically waving their hands, screaming silently as their control boards locked up completely.
Then, audio began to play through the high-powered speakers.
It wasn't corporate music.
It was a recorded phone call in Julian’s unmistakable voice.
“...I don't care how you do it, Rusk! Erase her prenatal charts from the mainframe before the morning shift! If the board finds out the M-17 marker is active in the mother, the whole IPO collapses! Get rid of her!”
Dead silence blanketed the ballroom. Four hundred pairs of eyes snapped away from the screen and locked onto Julian standing frozen at the podium.
Julian’s face went completely, catastrophically white.
Before he could speak, the screens updated again, displaying high-resolution scanned documents of forged court orders, offshore bank statements from Vanguard Global showing multi-million-dollar wire transfers to his personal accounts, and medical conspiracy affidavits signed by his own hand.
“Turn it off!” Julian shrieked, panic breaking through his polished exterior as he lunged at the podium microphone. “It’s a cyberattack! It’s deepfake technology! Don't look at it!”
Too late.
At the back of the ballroom, the heavy double doors swung open with a resounding crash.

Stepping into the room, flanked by two federal marshals in tactical gear, was Detective Miller of the Columbus Police Department—alongside a towering, broad-shouldered man in a dark trench coat whose cold, obsidian eyes locked immediately onto Julian.
Julian stopped breathing. He stared down from the stage at Luka Moretti, realizing with absolute, crushing horror that the nightmare had only just begun.
