Chapter 13 - The Final Confession

-13-
The interrogation room at the federal courthouse in downtown Columbus smelled of cold steel and institutional floor wax. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a harsh glare over the stainless-steel table bolted to the floor.
Julian Sterling sat slumped in the metal chair, his expensive midnight-blue tuxedo wrinkled and stained with sweat. His hands were cuffed to a metal loop in the center of the table. The man who had walked across a gala stage to receive a plaque of honor an hour earlier now looked like a broken, hollowed-out shell of a human being.
The heavy metal door swung open.
Clara Vance walked in.
She wore a simple black coat, her hair falling softly around her shoulders. She looked tired, pale from the events of the past forty-eight hours, but her eyes burned with an unwavering, unbreakable strength. Behind her stood Luka Moretti, leaning silently against the doorway like a sentinel carved from stone.
Julian raised his head slowly. When he saw Clara, a pathetic, desperate whine escaped his throat.
“Clara...” Julian choked out, leaning forward until the handcuffs rattled against the steel. “Clara, please... you have to listen to me. I was forced. The syndicate... they threatened my family, my firm, everything! I didn't want to hurt you!”
Clara walked slowly to the opposite side of the table and sat down. She didn't shout. She didn't cry. She simply looked at the man she had trusted with her life, feeling nothing at all.
“You didn't care about a family, Julian,” Clara said, her voice quiet and steady. “You cared about a balance sheet. You cared about a corporation that traded human lives like commodities.”
“The baby—” Julian started, his voice cracking. “Where is my daughter? Clara, I have parental rights! The court—!”
“You have nothing, Julian,” Luka interrupted, stepping forward out of the shadows. He tossed a thick manila folder onto the table right in front of Julian’s hands.
Julian looked down at the folder. He didn't need to open it to know what it contained.
It was the final, unassailable legal decree—signed by a federal judge thirty minutes prior—revoking all of Julian’s parental rights, dissolving his marriage under grounds of severe corporate fraud and attempted endangerment, and transferring absolute sole custody of Maya Vance exclusively to Clara Vance... with Luka Moretti legally registered as the secondary guardian and protector.
“No,” Julian whispered, shaking his head frantically as tears spilled over his lower lashes. “No, you can't do this... she’s my flesh and blood!”
“She is nothing to you,” Luka said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that made Julian flinch backward. “And by the time the federal prosecutors finish compiling the forty-two counts of treason, embezzlement, and conspiracy against you, you won't see the sun rise outside a maximum-security federal penitentiary for the rest of your natural life.”
Julian buried his face in his cuffed hands, his shoulders shaking with wretched, uncontrollable sobs as the realization of his total, absolute ruin finally crushed him into the earth.
Clara stood up from the table. She looked down at him one last time, feeling not triumph, but a profound sense of closure.

“Goodbye, Julian,” she said softly.
She turned around and walked out of the interrogation room, leaving her ex-husband alone in the dark with the wreckage of his own ambition.
