Chapter 9 - The Dawn of Reckoning-9

The first light of dawn broke over Lake Michigan, casting a cold, crisp gold across the rain-washed skyline of Chicago. Inside Suite 904, the chaotic storm of the previous night felt like a distant, bad dream, though the morning headlines were already reflecting the seismic shift that had rocked the city.
Ethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a hot cup of black coffee. On the glass coffee table behind him sat his tablet, its screen constantly flickering with incoming news alerts and urgent messages from corporate board members, legal teams, and international news outlets.

Ethan didn't read the articles. He didn't care about the corporate drama or the sensationalized headlines. His focus was entirely on the small girl sitting cross-legged on the plush rug near the window, quietly drawing pictures on a pad of paper with a box of colored pencils Lupita had brought up earlier with breakfast.
A quiet knock echoed at the suite’s front door.
Ethan walked over and opened it. Marcus stood in the hallway, wearing a sharp dark suit instead of his tactical vest, looking exhausted but triumphant.
“The federal prosecutors just finished booking Arthur and his six associates,” Marcus said, stepping into the suite and closing the door behind him. “Herr Voss and his international team are being held without bail on federal racketeering, wire fraud, and conspiracy charges.”
Ethan nodded slowly, taking a sip of his coffee. “What about the accident in Colorado?”
Marcus’s expression sobered. He pulled a thin manila folder from under his arm and handed it to Ethan. “The local authorities in Denver reopened Sarah’s case two hours ago based on the files we recovered from the vault. Arthur’s personal assistant confessed under interrogation. The vehicle Sarah was driving three years ago was tampered with at the airport parking lot before she drove into the mountains.”
Ethan closed his eyes for a moment, letting the final piece of the heartbreaking truth settle in his mind. The lingering doubt that had haunted him for three years—the belief that Sarah’s death was an unavoidable twist of fate—was officially gone. It was murder. But now, the people responsible were behind bars.
“It’s over, Ethan,” Marcus said gently, placing a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “She can rest now. And so can you.”
“Not quite yet,” Ethan said, looking down at the file. “We still have a company to rebuild.”
“The board of directors called an emergency meeting downstairs for ten o’clock,” Marcus warned. “They are panicked, Ethan. The stock prices dropped fifteen percent overnight. They need you to step back into the CEO chair and stabilize the ship.”
Ethan looked back at Lily, who was currently holding up a drawing of a bright yellow sun over a green house, showing it to her stuffed bunny.
“I’m not taking the CEO chair, Marcus,” Ethan said quietly.
Marcus frowned, surprised. “What? Ethan, you built this company. You’re the only person with the authority and respect to clean up this mess.”
“I built this company when I thought success was measured by the number of high-rise hotels carrying my name,” Ethan said, his voice filled with a calm, unshakeable clarity. “I lost three years of Lily’s life running away from the guilt. I’m not going to lose the rest of her childhood running a corporate empire.”
“Then who runs the Regent Group?” Marcus asked.
Ethan smiled faintly. “You do. As interim Chairman. With a completely restructured board of ethics, starting with people who actually care about what happens on the ground.”
Marcus stared at his brother for a moment, then let out a low laugh, shaking his head. “You’re crazy, you know that?”
“I’ve never been clearer in my life,” Ethan said.
At that moment, the door to the bedroom opened, and Lupita walked out wearing her neat housekeeping uniform, holding a fresh tray of warm pastries and orange juice. Lily instantly looked up, her face lighting up with a bright smile.
“Miss Lupita!” Lily cried out, jumping up from the rug and running over to hold the edge of the housekeeper’s apron. “Did you bring the apple pastries?”
May you like
“I certainly did, little princess,” Lupita said warmly, setting the tray down on the table and kneeling to Lily’s eye level. “With extra cinnamon, just like your father asked.”
Ethan watched them interact, feeling a deep warmth spread through his chest. The damage caused by vanity, greed, and indifference at the Grand Regent had been severe—but the healing had already begun.
