Chapter 7 - The Grand Ballroom-7

The dense white chemical cloud filled the vault, blinding the tactical team and throwing the underground command center into complete disarray. Cries in foreign languages and coughing fits echoed through the server corridors as security guards tried to clear their sightlines.

Ethan didn't look back. He sprinted through the service doors into the secondary corridor, trailing Arthur’s frantic, heavy footsteps.

Arthur was running on pure adrenaline and sheer panic, taking the service stairs two at a time as he fled upward toward the main levels of the hotel. Ethan followed, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Every step upward felt like a step toward bringing Sarah’s long-buried truth into the light of day.

Up ahead, heavy oak doors swung open, spilling warm, golden light and the booming sound of a live orchestra into the corridor.

Arthur burst out of the service hallway and stumbled directly onto the raised marble stage of the Grand Regent’s main ballroom.

The ballroom was packed to capacity. Hundreds of Chicago’s high-society elite—politicians, corporate executives, socialites, and investors—were dressed in evening gowns and tuxedos, holding champagne flutes under the immense crystal chandeliers. They froze, turning their heads in collective shock as the general manager of the hotel stumbled onto the stage, his hair disheveled, his tuxedo jacket torn, and his face pale with sweat and panic.

“Arthur?” the master of ceremonies stammered, dropping his microphone slightly.

Before Arthur could speak, the double service doors flew open again, and Ethan Vance stepped onto the stage.

The crowd gasped. The contrast was startling: Arthur, the epitome of high-society elegance, cowering near the podium, and Ethan, wearing his faded brown leather jacket with three days of stubble, his dark eyes ablaze with unyielding purpose.

“What is the meaning of this?” an investor in the front row shouted. “Security! Get this man off the stage!”

Two hotel security guards began rushing toward the stage from the side aisles.

Ethan reached inside his leather jacket. The crowd panicked, several women screaming, believing he was reaching for a weapon.

Instead, Ethan pulled out the worn, frayed leather notebook—Sarah’s diary—and held it high above his head. He walked directly to the podium, grabbed the main microphone, and pulled it toward his mouth.

“My name is Ethan Vance,” his voice boomed across the vast ballroom, amplified by forty high-end speakers, cutting through the murmurs of the crowd like a thunderclap. “I am the founder and chairman of the Regent Hospitality Group. And this hotel is currently being used to run an illegal international financial syndicate.”

A shockwave of whispers erupted through the audience.

“He’s insane!” Arthur shrieked, scrambling to his feet and lunging toward the microphone. “He’s a grieving widow who lost his mind years ago! Security, remove him immediately!”

Ethan didn't step back. As the two security guards reached the stage, Ethan held up his satellite phone with his other hand. The phone screen was lit up, connected to an active broadcast line.

“You’re too late, Arthur,” Ethan said, his voice ringing calm and clear across the room. “When I destroyed the main servers downstairs, the backup protocol automatically routed the full ledger files, the recorded security feeds, and your own signed transfer agreements directly to the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

As if on cue, the heavy double glass doors at the main entrance of the Grand Regent Hotel were shattered open.

Dozens of armed federal agents clad in dark blue jackets with yellow 'FBI' lettering flooded into the grand lobby, led by a tall, sharp-eyed man in a tactical vest: Marcus Vance.

“Nobody move!” Marcus’s voice echoed through the lobby, backed by the flashing red and blue lights of twenty police cruisers lined up along the rain-slicked Chicago street outside. “Federal agents! Secure all exits!”

The grand ballroom dissolved into utter chaos. High-society guests scrambled for the doors, champagne glasses shattered on the marble floor, and corporate board members turned on each other in a desperate bid to distance themselves from the unfolding disaster.

Arthur dropped to his knees on the stage, his hands trembling as he stared at the floor, knowing his life, his empire, and his freedom had vanished in a single evening.

Ethan lowered the microphone. He stood on the edge of the stage, watching the chaos unfold, feeling no joy, no triumph—only a deep, quiet sense of relief that the dark shadow hanging over his wife’s memory had finally been lifted.

He turned away from the stage, leaving Arthur to the federal agents, and walked swiftly back toward the private executive elevators.

He had one final, crucial duty left tonight.
