Chapter 5 - The Vault of Shadows-5

The temperature dropped noticeably as Ethan descended past the sub-basement level. The polished concrete of the upper stairwell gave way to old, exposed brick foundations dating back to the late nineteenth century, reinforced with heavy, modern steel girders and thick, industrial power cables that hummed with high-voltage electricity.

Ethan reached the bottom landing. A heavy, reinforced steel security door stood before him, completely unmarked save for a digital keypad flickering with a cold blue LED screen. Above the door, a sleek, wide-angle surveillance camera slowly pivoted from side to side.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He stepped smoothly out of the camera's blind spot, pulling his dark leather jacket tight to conceal his movement. Reaching up, he attached a small magnetic signal jammer—a device built by Marcus—directly onto the camera’s power housing. The small red indicator light on the camera flickered once, then turned a solid, dead grey.

He approached the lock console. Taking the gold master keycard Arthur had given him, he swiped it through the secondary magnetic slot. The screen flashed a yellow warning code:

[EXECUTIVE LEVEL ACCESS GRANTED - AWAITING SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION CLEARANCE]

Ethan pulled out the digital decrypter, attaching its multi-lead connector to the open maintenance port at the base of the keypad panel. He tapped the interface, opening the encrypted terminal window.

“The override code is tied to the date we broke ground on this building,” Sarah’s notebook had read.

Ethan knew that date by heart. It was May 14th, eleven years ago—the same day he had proposed to Sarah on the empty plot of land before construction began.

0-5-1-4

Ethan punched the numbers into the physical pad.

For two agonizing seconds, the console hummed. Then, a sharp pneumatic hiss echoed through the corridor as four heavy steel deadbolts retracted into the frame. The heavy door clicked open an inch, revealing a strip of bright, clinical white light within.

Ethan pushed the door open silently and stepped inside.

The space beyond was not a dusty hotel basement; it was a state-of-the-art, high-tech command facility. The walls were lined with floor-to-ceiling server racks, their cooling fans creating a soft, continuous rush of air. Dozens of monitors displayed real-time financial tracking graphs, live feeds from high-stakes private gambling tables, and encrypted transaction routes spanning across Zurich, London, and Grand Cayman.

In the center of the vast, subterranean room stood a massive mahogany conference table surrounded by leather chairs. Sitting around the table were six men in immaculate dark suits, sipping expensive scotch while reviewing glowing tablet screens.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, flanked by two towering men in plain dark suits with distinct tactical holsters visible under their jackets.

“The transaction clearance from the Zurich account is delayed by ten minutes,” one of the suit-clad men was saying in a thick European accent. “We need Arthur’s master signature to finalize the transfer of the Regent asset shares.”

“Don't worry, Herr Voss,” Arthur’s smooth voice echoed through the room as he poured himself a glass of amber liquid. “Ethan Vance is currently trapped in Suite 904, clutching his dead wife’s memories and waiting for a morning that will see him completely stripped of his corporate authority. The board will sign the receivership paperwork by midnight, and the Regent Group’s physical properties will be entirely yours to route through.”

Ethan stepped out from the shadows of the server racks, his hands casually in the pockets of his brown leather jacket.

“You always were terrible at reading the room, Arthur,” Ethan said, his voice ringing across the high-tech vault like a gunshot.

The entire room went dead silent.

Every man at the mahogany table froze. The two tactical guards instantly reached for their holsters, but before they could draw, Ethan raised a small, matte-black remote control unit he had pulled from his decrypter kit.

“I wouldn't draw those weapons,” Ethan said with absolute composure, taking three steady steps toward the table. “That little device on the main server junction behind me isn't just a signal jammer. It’s an electromagnetic pulse trigger wired into your main server array. Draw a gun, and every byte of encrypted financial data in this vault gets permanently fried before it reaches Zurich.”

The European investor, Herr Voss, snapped his tablet shut, his face turning dark with fury. He glared up at Arthur. “Pendelton! Who is this man? You guaranteed absolute security!”

Arthur had stood up so fast his leather chair tipped backward, crashing onto the polished floor. The suave, unshakeable general manager had vanished, replaced by a man whose face had gone completely chalk-white, his jaw trembling in shock.

“Ethan...” Arthur breathed, his voice cracking. “How... how did you get down here?”

“My wife showed me the way,” Ethan replied softly, stepping right up to the edge of the glass conference table. “Three years late, Arthur. But I finally got the message.”
