Chapter 14 - Whispers in the Wind-14

Later that evening, after the gala had concluded and the guests had departed, I retreated to the private balcony of my penthouse suite overlooking the glittering skyline of Oakville.
The night air was cool and crisp, carrying the gentle scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard below. I held a crystal flute of vintage champagne in my hand, watching the distant lights of the city blink like steady stars against the dark canvas of the night.
My phone vibrated gently on the glass table beside me.
I picked it up and opened a secure message from Special Agent Sterling: “Transfer of inmate Gavin Barrett to the federal supermax facility in Colorado is complete. Total isolation wing. No communication privileges. Case closed, Madam Chairwoman.”
I locked the screen and set the phone back down.
Gavin had wanted power. He had wanted wealth, status, and control above all else. In his blind, arrogant pursuit, he had destroyed himself, reducing his entire existence to a numbered cage in a frozen wasteland. He had thought that by eliminating my father and stripping me of my name, he could step into the shoes of an emperor.
He never understood the fundamental truth of bloodlines and legacy: an empire is not built on paper documents or forced signatures. It is forged in character, forged in resilience, and sealed with an unyielding will that no traitor can ever break.
A gentle breeze rustled through my hair. For a brief second, I fancied I could hear my father’s voice carried on the wind—not the scratchy recording from the vault, but his living, laughing voice, telling me well done.

I raised my champagne glass toward the dark sky.
"To new beginnings, Dad," I whispered to the empty night. "And to never letting the wolves back inside the gate."
