Chapter 10 - The Nexus Conspiracy-10

Clara Hayes took a slow, trembling sip of tea before pulling a thick manila folder from her leather satchel and placing it on my desk.

"When Gavin founded Nexus Bio-Tech under his mother's name, he told us it was just a subsidiary research firm for medical technology," Clara explained, her eyes darting nervously toward the door as if expecting someone to burst in. "But three weeks before your father passed away, Gavin ordered us to falsify clinical trial safety reports for an experimental neuro-pharmaceutical compound called Aegis-7."

I frowned, scanning the top pages of the documents she had provided. "Aegis-7? I've never heard of it in Summit's official portfolio."

"That's because it was never authorized by Summit's board," Clara said grimly. "Gavin was secretly using Summit's laboratory facilities after hours to manufacture the drug. It's a high-potency cognitive inhibitor—something that, in small doses, can induce profound disorientation, memory lapses, and temporary paralysis without leaving a trace in standard toxicological screenings."

A cold, terrifying realization hit me like a physical blow.

Two weeks before my father's car crash.

The night I was running a high fever when Gavin brought me "urgent bank paperwork" and made me tea.

"My God..." I whispered, the color draining from my face. "He didn't just drug me to make me sign the divorce papers. He was testing the compound on me first."

"That's not even the worst of it," Clara continued, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Your father discovered the Nexus laboratories two days before his accident. He caught Gavin red-handed downloading the proprietary chemical formulas to sell to an international pharmaceutical cartel based in Zurich. Your father threatened to strip Gavin of his executive title and hand him over to federal authorities that very night."

The puzzle pieces clicked together with horrifying precision. Gavin hadn't caused my father's car crash out of mere corporate greed. He had murdered him in cold blood to prevent the exposure of high-treason industrial espionage and pharmaceutical smuggling.

"Do you have digital proof of the formula transfers to the Zurich syndicate?" I asked, my voice deadly calm.

Clara nodded, sliding a secondary flash drive across the desk. "Every encrypted email, every server log, and every financial wire receipt from the Swiss buyers. I copied the database before Gavin locked me out of the system."

I picked up the flash drive, feeling the weight of absolute proof in my palm. Gavin thought he had covered his tracks. He thought he was untouchable behind his tailored suits and corporate titles. But his greed and arrogance had left a trail wide enough for an army to march through.

"Clara," I said, looking her squarely in the eye. "You are no longer an accessory or a threatened employee. You are my chief corporate compliance officer, effective immediately, with a triple-salary matching bonus and full legal immunity under whistleblower protection."

Clara stared at me in stunned disbelief before tears of relief welled in her eyes. "Thank you, Miss Albright. I'll testify anywhere, anytime."

"Get some rest," I instructed gently. "Tomorrow morning, we take this straight to the FBI's counter-intelligence division."
