Chapter 7 - The Interrogator’s Mirror-7

Six months later.
The air inside the interrogation room at the Federal Building in downtown Boston was crisp, smelling faintly of institutional floor wax, cold coffee, and the quiet, crushing weight of absolute justice. The room was a stark, sterile cube of white concrete and brushed steel, dominated by a massive, one-way mirror that took up an entire wall.
Brandon Merrick—now legally processed and stripped of every corporate asset line he had stolen—sat on the opposite side of the steel table.
He wore a bright orange inmate jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles secured to the floor anchors by heavy steel chains that clinked dismally against the floorboards with every minor movement. His hair was uncombed, his face gaunt, his eyes bloodshot and rimmed with deep, dark shadows. The arrogant, confident man who had packed his fishing bag and told me to "act like a mother" had completely vanished, replaced by a jagged, broken shadow of pure, desperate defeat.
I stood behind the one-way mirror in the observation room, my arms crossed over my tailored gray suit jacket, my eyes fixed flat on the monitor displaying his vitals. Beside me stood Special Agent Harris.
"He hasn't spoken a single word to his defense team since the grand jury signed the indictments last week," Agent Harris said, turning a page on her digital tablet. "He refused medical treatment beyond the basic clinic checks. He just sits there, staring at the concrete door like he’s waiting for a message from Cyprus."

"The Cyprus pipeline is completely dead, Harris," I said, my voice calm and devoid of anger. I looked at him through the glass with a cold, clinical detachment. "The federal receivership completed the asset liquidation process on his personal real estate portfolio yesterday afternoon. Every dollar of the recovered eighty-five million dollars has been officially channeled into a non-revocable public trust—The Clara and Nora Merrick Foundation for Forensic Advocacy and Child Security."
"The foundation is opening its first tracking hubs inside the family court system next month, Maya," Agent Harris smiled softly. "We’re going to ensure that no corporate executive can ever use a forged digital signature token or domestic coercion to systematically isolate a mother from her children. You gave this state its dignity back, Maya."
