The true architecture of Brandon’s domestic betrayal was far more sinister than standard marital neglect. Sitting beside Maren in the quiet Boston office was my older brother, Victor Winters—a senior enforcement attorney with the United States Department of Justice.

Victor opened a thick binder containing physical paper ledgers, spreading the copied bank drafts across my desk.

"He didn't just want a break from the crying babies, Maya," Victor said, pointing a pen toward a series of fraudulent wire transfers dated three weeks before the twins were born. "Look at the authorization stamps. Brandon didn't accidentally stumble into this Noraline network. He actively forged your digital compliance signature while you were under anesthesia during your emergency C-section."

My hands tightened around the armrests of my chair, a cold, dangerous fire igniting in my chest. "He used my medical clearance codes?"

"Yes," Victor said coldly. "He used your credentials as a Chief Auditor to create a false regulatory exemption for Vanguard’s shipping containers. Over the last six months, while you were up at 3:00 a.m. nursing Clara and Nora, Brandon was using your official digital token to sign off on un-inspected cargo manifests passing through the Port of Newark."

"What was in those containers, Victor?"

"Contraband, unregistered industrial tech, and offshore capital tokens," Victor replied flatly. "They paid him a two-percent dividend per clearance. He accumulated over four million dollars in a private Cypriot account registered under his mistress's name."

The room seemed to drop ten degrees. "Sloane Mercer," I whispered.

"Sloane Mercer," Victor confirmed. "His executive assistant at Vanguard. The woman who happened to be staying at that same mountain chalet in Aspen for the last four days while Brandon was 'fishing'."

I stood up from my desk, walking over to the glass window overlooking the harbor. The gray water below rolled beneath a cold summer sleet, reflecting the harsh light of the city towers.

Brandon had looked down at me four nights ago, watching me struggle with two crying infants, and told me that if I wanted to be a mother, I should act like one. He thought he was superior, untouchable, and clever enough to use his wife as a legal shield for his corporate treason while building a second life with his mistress on offshore blood money.

He thought I was just a tired mother. He was about to find out what a protective mother with federal authority could do to a traitor’s world.
