Chapter 5 - Storage Unit 108-5

The subterranean sub-level beneath the Ironwood Maritime Annex near the Port of Newark was a cavernous, low-ceilinged vault of wet masonry, roaring ventilation turbines, and exposed high-voltage conduits. The air down here was hot, thick, smelling faintly of axle grease, diesel exhaust, and the sharp chemical tang of short-circuiting electrical lines running beneath the damp floorboards.
It was 11:24 p.m. We had precisely thirty-six minutes before the international financial clearing houses in New York closed their nightly processing loops, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently lock the Noraline asset transfers inside Cypriot vaults.
I stood on the elevated iron catwalk overlooking the vault floor, flanked by Special Agent Harris and a strike team from the Public Corruption Task Force. Down below, illuminated by the harsh glare of halogen work lamps, stood Martin Pierce—Sloane Mercer’s primary asset manager—and Brandon’s younger brother, Ryan Merrick.
They were standing before a master cryptographic console terminal marked Unit 108, their fingers moving with frantic speed across a mechanical keyboard as they attempted to force a manual zero-fill wipe script across Vanguard's root servers. Beside the laptop sat a carbon-fiber document box containing the physical hardware tokens Brandon had forged using my medical profile.
"They're trying to burn the paper trail before the grand jury unseals the indictments tomorrow morning, Maya," Agent Harris said, her hand resting firmly on her holstered service weapon. "If that wipe script reaches one hundred percent, we lose the baseline documentation linking the Cypriot handlers to the infrastructure grant theft."
"They won't finish the wipe," I said softly, my voice completely devoid of hesitation.
I stepped onto the metal stairwell and walked down to the concrete vault floor, my heavy leather boots leaving sharp, rhythmic metrics against the wet pavement.
"Step away from the terminal, Ryan," my voice echoed through the concrete vault like a pipe clap of thunder.
Ryan’s head snapped up, his eyes widening in pure terror as he saw me standing under the halogen lights in my charcoal suit, flanked by heavily armed federal agents. "Maya? What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be at home with the babies!"
"The babies are safe, Ryan," I said flatly, stopping ten feet from the desk. "Where your brother is going, he won't be taking any fishing trips."

Martin Pierce didn't panic. He slowly reached beneath the administrative desk, his hand emerging with a short-barreled compact automatic carbine, leveling the barrel straight at my chest before the tactical team could even take position.
"You really are a remarkably stubborn woman, Mrs. Merrick," Martin hissed, his eyes cold and devoid of human empathy. "The Nicosia wire clears in precisely ninety seconds. If anyone takes another step, I execute an immediate thermal runaway script, vaporizing every digital footprint of your family trust and this server core simultaneously."
