Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Lie-6

"My God, Lucas..." Captain Sterling whispered, leaning over my shoulder as he read the yellowed laboratory report. "This changes everything. This isn't just a domestic violence and fraud case anymore. This is an active capital murder investigation."

"She killed him," I said, my voice barely audible, sounding hollowed-out and dead even to my own ears. "My father served twenty-six years in Special Operations. He survived three combat deployments, improvised explosive devices, and helicopter crashes... only to be poisoned in his own bed by his wife."

"We need to get this directly to the State Police Homicide Division and the Army Criminal Investigation Division," Sterling said urgently, taking out a pair of sterile evidence gloves and carefully sealing the leather binder inside a biohazard containment bag. "If the military coroner reopens CW4 Edward Vance’s death investigation with this physical evidence, Eleanor will be facing the death penalty or life without parole under federal military jurisdiction."

Within two hours, the quiet suburban street was once again swarming with federal vehicles. This time, it wasn't just local police; agents from the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and state homicide detectives were documenting every square inch of the guest room and the basement.

I stood on the front lawn, watching as evidence bags containing my father’s old financial records, Eleanor’s private journals, and chemical containers extracted from her locked vanity were loaded into the back of a CID forensic van.

Detective Miller walked over to me, holding a tablet displaying an updated warrant sheet.

"We just executed a search warrant on Dr. Harold Finch’s clinic downtown," Miller reported, his face grim. "We caught him in his office trying to shred medical files. My officers secured his primary server. We found digital copies of over fifty fraudulent medical evaluations he had sold to wealthy clients over the past three years—including the fake postpartum psychosis report for Sophia."

"Did he break?" I asked, looking out toward the horizon.

"The moment CID agents walked into his office with federal search warrants, Finch collapsed," Miller said with a cold, satisfaction-filled smile. "He’s currently singing like a bird. He admitted that Eleanor paid him five thousand dollars in cash three weeks ago to draft the evaluation. He also admitted that Eleanor asked him detailed questions about tasteless cardiac toxins that wouldn't show up on standard routine hospital panels."

The horrific symmetry of her plan was completely naked now. Eleanor was planning to use Finch to provide a synthetic toxic compound—the same method she used on my father—to quietly eliminate Sophia once the custody transfer of Leo was finalized by the probate court.

She didn't just want my money. She was a serial predator who viewed her own family as financial cattle to be slaughtered whenever her debts mounted.

"Where is she now?" I asked.

"She’s in a high-security holding cell at the county jail, under twenty-four-hour suicide watch," Miller replied. "District Attorney Croft just upgraded her charges to include Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, Forgery, Extortion, and Fraud. And as soon as CID finishes cross-referencing your father’s medical files, the federal government will be lodging formal capital murder charges."
