Chapter 10 - The Grand Jury Indictment-10

Forty-eight hours later, the federal indictment was officially read in open court.

Because my father was an active-duty Chief Warrant Officer at the time of his death, and because I was an active-duty Captain deployed under federal combat orders when the crimes against my family occurred, the United States Department of Justice exercised primary jurisdiction over the entire case, stripping the local civilian courts of authority and moving the proceedings to the Federal District Court under military-civilian joint prosecution.

The indictment list against Eleanor Vance read like a catalog of absolute malice:

Capital Murder under Military Jurisdiction (10 U.S.C. § 918)

Attempted Premeditated Murder (State & Federal)

Aggravated Human Trafficking & False Imprisonment

Felony Child Abuse and Endangerment of a Minor

Federal Wire Fraud & Mail Fraud (18 U.S.C. § 1343)

Aggravated Identity Theft & Forgery of Military Documents

Racketeering and Corrupt Organization Conspiracy (RICO)

Audrey Vance’s indictment list was equally devastating, ensuring that her claims of being a "passive bystander" were completely obliterated by her active participation in Sophia’s imprisonment and the financial theft.

Dr. Harold Finch had already signed a comprehensive plea agreement, surrendering his medical license permanently and agreeing to serve twenty-five years in federal prison in exchange for testifying as the prosecution’s primary witness against Eleanor.

That afternoon, Captain Sterling and I met with Sophia in the sunlit courtyard of our home.

Sophia was sitting on a teak bench, holding Leo in her arms while he happily cooed at the rustling oak leaves above. Her physical recovery was progressing remarkably well, supported by dedicated military medical staff and the absolute, unshakeable peace of knowing her tormentors were behind concrete walls.

"They filed the formal asset recovery motions this morning, Sophia," Sterling announced, sitting on an adjacent chair and handing us a copy of the court order. "The federal government has executed an emergency freeze on all accounts associated with Eleanor Vance, Audrey Vance, and Vance Properties LLC."

"What does that mean for the trust?" Sophia asked softly.

"It means every single dollar stolen from Lucas’s military pay, your personal accounts, and your father’s estate has been fully clawed back," Sterling explained with a warm smile. "Furthermore, the court has ordered the immediate liquidation of Eleanor’s personal assets—including her luxury vehicles and remaining real estate holdings—to satisfy a three-million-dollar civil restitution judgment awarded directly to you and Leo."

Sophia looked at me, her brown eyes shining with tears of relief. I reached out, covering her hand with mine, squeezing gently.

"It’s really over, isn't it?" she whispered.

"No, baby," I smiled, leaning down to kiss her forehead and then Leo’s soft cheek. "The nightmare is over. Our real life is just beginning."
