Chapter 3 - The Financial Vault-3

At 4:00 a.m., Sterling and I sat in a private consultation room down the hall from Sophia’s ward. Spread across the laminate conference table were three months of forensic bank audits that my military investigative team had compiled while I was still onboard the troop transport ship heading back to the States.
"When you deployed eight months ago, Lucas," Sterling said, pointing a gold pen at a series of wire transfers, "your monthly military allotment of six thousand dollars was configured to go directly into the joint account you shared with Sophia. However, ninety days into your deployment, a fraudulent Special Power of Attorney document was submitted to the base finance office."
He slid a document across the table. It bore my forged signature and a fake notary seal from a local civilian notary public named Harold Finch.
"This Power of Attorney granted Eleanor Vance full administrative authority over your military pay, your personal savings, and the primary disbursement accounts of the Vance Family Trust," Sterling continued. "The moment that document cleared, Eleanor systematically stripped Sophia of her signing privileges. She removed Sophia’s name from the joint account entirely."
"How much did they take?" I asked, my voice dropping into an icy register.
"From your military pay and deployment combat bonuses? Roughly forty-eight thousand dollars," Sterling revealed. "But that was just the petty cash, Lucas. Look at the secondary trust ledger—the one established by your late father, Edward Vance, before his death five years ago."
I leaned over the paper. My father had been a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the Army Special Operations Aviation Regiment who had allegedly died of a sudden, massive stroke at the age of fifty-two. He had left behind a three-hundred-thousand-dollar life insurance policy and a commercial real estate holding in the city, held inside a restricted military trust meant to vest entirely in my name upon my thirty0th birthday or upon the birth of my first child.
"Six weeks ago," Sterling said, his voice lowering, "a petition was filed in the county probate court to alter the disbursement rules of the Edward Vance Estate Trust. The petition claimed that you, as the primary beneficiary, were deployed in a combat zone and had mentally incapacitated your wife, rendering both of you unable to manage the estate. The petition requested that full executorship be transferred permanently to Eleanor Vance, with Audrey named as the contingent trustee."
"Who signed the supporting affidavit claiming Sophia was mentally incapacitated?" I demanded.
"Dr. Harold Finch," Sterling replied grimly. "The exact same man who notarized the fake Power of Attorney. He runs a private, cash-only medical clinic on the south side of town. He signed a sworn medical statement claiming he had evaluated Sophia in person and diagnosed her with severe, violent postpartum psychosis that presented an immediate danger to her child."
"Sophia has never set foot in that man’s clinic," I said, the rage boiling in my blood. "She didn't even know who he was."
"Precisely," Sterling agreed. "Eleanor and Audrey were setting up a complete legal frame-job. Their plan was airtight on paper: establish that Sophia was an abusive, psychotic mother, use your deployment isolation to prevent you from interfering, leverage Finch’s fake medical reports to gain legal custody of Leo, and take permanent control of the three-hundred-thousand-dollar trust plus the commercial real estate."

"And what were they planning to do with Sophia once they had custody of my son?"
Sterling looked me dead in the eye, his expression completely devoid of comfort. "Lucas, when a person is legally declared violently psychotic and locked in a house without a phone, suffering from internal injuries and severe infection... they don't usually survive the process. If you had arrived home two weeks later, as your original deployment orders stated, you wouldn't have found a wife on the nursery floor. You would have found a funeral."
