Chapter 12 - The Verdict of Steel-12

The trial lasted precisely six days.
The prosecution’s presentation of evidence was a masterclass in forensic destruction. Day by day, the jury was shown the pristine 4K video footage of Eleanor standing over my weeping wife in the kitchen; they listened to the crystal-clear audio recordings of Eleanor muttering "drama queen" as Sophia lay bleeding on the rug; they heard the testimony of Dr. Harold Finch detailing how Eleanor paid him to forge psychiatric documents; and they watched military toxicologists demonstrate how the lethal concentrations of Digitalis found in my father’s exhumed remains matched the exact private journals recovered from Eleanor’s floor safe.
When Audrey Vance took the witness stand on the fourth day, sobbing uncontrollably as she detailed her mother's step-by-step plan to starve Leo and let Sophia die of an infection, three members of the jury were visibly weeping with disgust.
The defense called zero witnesses. Eleanor refused to testify in her own defense after her legal team advised her that cross-examination by the federal prosecutors would result in absolute ruin.
On the seventh day, after deliberating for less than forty-five minutes, the jury returned to the courtroom.
"Madam Foreperson," Judge Croft asked, "has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"
"We have, Your Honor," the lead juror, a stern-looking veteran in his sixties, replied firmly.
He handed the official verdict sheets to the court bailiff, who passed them up to the bench. Judge Croft reviewed the documents, nodded slowly, and looked down at the defense table.
"The defendant will rise for the reading of the verdict."
Eleanor stood up slowly, supported on either side by federal marshals. Her hands were shaking so violently that her iron shackles clinked in a continuous, frantic rhythm against the carpet.
"On Count One, Capital Murder under Military Jurisdiction: GUILTY."
"On Count Two, Attempted Premeditated First-Degree Murder: GUILTY."
"On Count Three, Aggravated Human Trafficking & False Imprisonment: GUILTY."
"On Count Four, Aggravated Child Abuse and Endangerment of a Minor: GUILTY."
"On Count Five, Federal Wire Fraud and Extortion: GUILTY."
"On Count Six, Aggravated Identity Theft and Document Forgery: GUILTY."
"On Count Seven, Racketeering and Corrupt Organization Conspiracy: GUILTY."
A collective gasp went through the gallery, followed by the heavy, decisive thud of Judge Croft’s gavel.
"Eleanor Vance," Judge Croft spoke, his voice carrying the finality of a guillotine blade. "You have displayed a level of depravity, cruelty, and calculated greed that this court has rarely witnessed in thirty years on the bench. You betrayed your country, you murdered your husband, and you attempted to destroy the lives of your own child and grandchild."
He leaned forward over his mahogany bench.

"Under the sentencing guidelines of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the Federal Criminal Code, I sentence you to LIFE IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE, to be served at the Federal Correctional Institution in Alderson, West Virginia. You will never see the light of day as a free woman again."
Eleanor’s knees buckled completely. She let out a sharp, pathetic wail as the marshals caught her weight and dragged her limp body out through the side security door, her iron chains dragging along the floorboards until the heavy sound deadened behind the slamming steel door.
