Chapter 5 - The Cold Homecoming-5

On the evening of January 4, a freezing blizzard slammed into Chicago, blanketing O’Hare International Airport in six inches of white snow.

Inside the international arrivals terminal, the air was drafty and cold.

Walking slowly through the automated glass doors came Diane, Brooke, Jason, and their eight-year-old son.

They looked unrecognizable compared to the sun-soaked vacation photos posted five days earlier. Their clothes were wrinkled and stained; Diane’s expensive white linen suit was covered in mud around the hem, and Brooke was wearing a cheap plastic rain poncho over her sweater.

After being kicked out of the luxury resort, they had spent three miserable nights in a grimy, two-star motel five miles from the beach, paying for it by selling Jason’s watch and Brooke’s designer sunglasses to a local pawn shop. They had spent their last remaining cash on standby economy tickets back to Chicago, sitting near the lavatories on a four-hour flight without food or water.

"I am going to destroy Ethan," Diane muttered through chattering teeth, pulling her thin sweater tight around her shoulders as they dragged two battered carry-on bags through the terminal. "The moment we get to his house, I am going to slap him across the face! How dare he humiliate his own mother like this?!"

"He’s probably feeling guilty right now," Brooke said, her voice hoarse from crying. "He probably realized he made a mistake with the credit card. When we get to Oak Park, we demand he pay us back for the pawned jewelry and give us fifty thousand dollars for emotional distress!"

"And what about Claire?" Jason spat, his eyes bloodshot. "That useless woman probably ran her mouth to him on the phone! I told you we should have taken her phone away before we left for Mexico!"

"Don't worry about Claire," Diane sneered, stepping toward the airport exit doors. "Ethan will kick her out when I tell him how she treated us! Now come on, call an Uber!"

Jason pulled out his phone, opened the ride-share app, and attempted to book a vehicle to Oak Park.

A red warning box flashed on his screen: PAYMENT METHOD REJECTED.

"Dammit!" Jason cursed, slamming his hand against the glass wall. "My account is blocked!"

"Use your credit card!" Brooke yelled.

"It’s blocked too!"

"We’ll take a taxi and make Ethan pay the driver when we arrive at the house!" Diane declared, marching toward the outdoor taxi queue.

An hour later, a yellow taxicab pulled up to the curb outside Ethan’s Oak Park home.

The house was dark from the outside, save for a single light glowing in the upstairs nursery window.

Diane jumped out of the cab, marching up the snow-covered front walkway like a woman on a mission, followed closely by Brooke and Jason.

"Ethan!" Diane shouted, pounding her fist violently against the front door. "Ethan, open this door right now! Open this door!"

The front door remained shut.

Instead, the porch light clicked on, illuminating two heavy steel padlocks installed on the door frame, along with a bright neon-yellow legal notice taped to the glass:

NOTICE OF EVICTION & RESTRICTING ORDER

THIS PROPERTY HAS BEEN PLACED UNDER AN EMERGENCY PROTECTIVE ORDER ISSUED BY THE COOK COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT. ABSOLUTE NO TRESPASSING. ALL UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS WILL BE ARRESTED IMMEDIATELY.

Diane froze, staring at the legal notice in absolute disbelief. "What... what is this?!"

Before Jason could react, two black police cruisers pulled up silently to the curb behind the taxi, their red and blue lights flashing against the snow.

Four uniformed police officers stepped out of the vehicles, their hands resting on their sidearms.

"Diane Miller? Brooke Miller? Jason Miller?" the lead officer called out, walking up the driveway.

"Officer!" Diane turned around, her voice hysterical. "Thank God you’re here! My son has locked us out of our own family home! He’s mentally unstable! He left his sick wife inside and locked us out!"

"Ma'am, quiet down," the officer commanded coldly, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Brooke Miller, step forward and place your hands behind your back."

Brooke gasped, stepping back behind her husband. "What?! Why?! I haven't done anything wrong!"

"Brooke Miller, you are under arrest pursuant to a felony warrant issued by the State Prosecutor for computer fraud, identity theft, and corporate extortion," the officer stated clearly.

"No! No!" Brooke screamed as two officers grabbed her arms, pulling her down onto the snowy lawn and snapping the cold cuffs around her wrists. "Mom! Help me! Jason! Do something!"

"Let her go!" Diane shrieked, lunging toward the officers. "You can't arrest my daughter! This is a family matter! Ethan! ETHAN!"

At that moment, the front door of the house opened slowly.

Ethan stepped out onto the porch, wearing a dark wool overcoat. He stood tall, looking down at his mother, his sister, and Jason with eyes as cold as the ice beneath their feet.

Behind him in the warm hallway, Claire stood wrapped in a plush new robe, holding baby Lily safely in her arms, surrounded by two private security guards.

"Ethan!" Diane wailed, falling to her knees in the snow, extending her hands toward him. "Ethan, tell them to stop! Tell them it’s a mistake! Look at what they’re doing to your sister!"

Ethan walked slowly down the porch steps, stopping three feet away from his kneeling mother.

"It’s no mistake, Diane," Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying clarity across the quiet neighborhood street. "I filed the report myself."
