Chapter 11 - The Shadow of Edward Miller-11

The rain poured heavily against the high windows of the corporate boardroom on the top floor of Stuttgart Auto Systems in Chicago.

Ethan sat at the head of the long oak conference table. Across from him sat Herr Weber, the Global Vice President who had flown in directly from Germany, accompanied by two senior corporate legal counsel members.

On the table between them lay a dusty, leather-bound engineering notebook—the private journal of Edward Miller, retrieved three hours ago from a safe deposit box in Evanston that Ethan’s mother had kept hidden for over a decade.

Herr Weber looked pale, his hands folded tightly over his lap as he stared at the technical diagrams written in Edward Miller’s precise handwriting.

"Ethan," Herr Weber began softly, his voice heavy with deep shame. "I give you my absolute word as a gentleman... neither I nor the current board of directors had any knowledge of this terrible crime."

"Who authorized the offshore hush money payments to my mother?" Ethan demanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl that echoed through the empty boardroom.

"The former Chief Executive Officer, Hans Richter, and former Chief Counsel Klaus Sterling," Weber admitted, bowing his head. "They were forced out of the company six years ago during an internal restructuring. But at the time, in 2011, they panicked. When your father, Edward, discovered the brake module defect, he threatened to go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."

"And what happened to him?" Ethan asked, his eyes burning into Weber's.

Weber opened a confidential internal file, sliding a red-bound report across the table.

"Your father did not die of stomach cancer, Ethan," Weber revealed quietly. "An internal audit completed by our private security team three years ago discovered that Klaus Sterling had paid a corrupt medical examiner to falsify your father's death certificate following a sudden, lethal digoxin overdose."

Ethan gripped the edge of the conference table so hard his knuckles turned white.

His mother had not just stolen his salary. She had taken hush money from the very men who had murdered his father, keeping the secret for fifteen years while using the blood money to fund her own lifestyle and pay for Jason's illegal gambling debts.

"When your mother realized you were climbing the executive ranks at Stuttgart Auto Systems two years ago," Weber continued, "she panicked. She was terrified that if you became Chief Regional Director, you would gain access to the classified 2011 historical audit files and discover what happened to your father."

Ethan remembered the anonymous tip submitted to HR by Brooke four months ago—the forged documents accusing him of corporate fraud.

"It wasn't just about money..." Ethan realized, horror washing over him. "Brooke and my mother tried to frame me for corporate fraud because they were trying to get me fired before I could discover my father's murder!"

"Yes," Weber confirmed grimly. "If you were disgraced and expelled from the company, you would never have received executive clearance to view the 2011 sealed files. They were protecting the hush money stream, Ethan. Because if the truth came out, the offshore trust would be seized, and your mother would face accessory-to-murder charges."

Ethan closed his eyes, taking a long, deep breath to steady the storm raging inside his soul.

The depth of his mother's monstrous betrayal went beyond anything he could have imagined. She had chosen silence and blood money over justice for her husband, and then attempted to destroy her own son to keep the payout flowing.

"Where is Hans Richter now?" Ethan opened his eyes, his gaze locking onto Weber with absolute lethal intent.

"Richter is retired, living in a luxury villa in Zurich, Switzerland," Weber answered. "And Klaus Sterling is currently a senior partner at a private law firm in New York."

Ethan stood up from the head of the table.

"Herr Weber," Ethan said calmly. "I want full corporate authorization to hand these internal security files directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Swiss Federal Prosecutor's Office today."

Weber stood up instantly, bowing his head with profound respect. "You have the full, unrestricted support of Stuttgart Auto Systems, Chief Director Miller. Justice for Edward Miller will be served."
