Chapter 10 - The Unseen Hand-10

Six months after the sentencing, life at the Miller household had achieved an idyllic rhythm. But beneath the surface of their new peace, a lingering question remained unanswered.
Ethan sat in his study at the regional corporate office, reviewing a set of historical documents that Arthur Vance had sent over earlier that morning.
The documents were old bank statements from his late father’s estate, dating back over fifteen years.
While auditing the final liquidations of his mother’s accounts, David Chen had noticed a strange recurring anomaly: starting two years before Ethan’s father died, regular monthly payments of five thousand dollars had been deposited into an undisclosed offshore account in the Cayman Islands under the name E. Miller.
Ethan had always assumed "E. Miller" referred to his father, Edward Miller. But his father had died in 2014 after a long battle with cancer.
The offshore deposits, however, had not stopped in 2014.
They had continued until December of the previous year—ending abruptly on the exact day Ethan froze the emergency black credit card.
Ethan picked up his phone and called David Chen directly.
"David," Ethan said, leaning over his desk. "Did you look into the Cayman Islands entity linked to my father's old estate?"
"Ethan," David replied, his voice sounding uncharacteristically tense. "I was just about to call you. I managed to get a court subpoena approved to trace the ultimate beneficial owner of that Cayman holding company."
"And who owns it?"
"It’s not owned by your mother, and it wasn't owned by your father," David revealed softly. "The account is held under a blind trust... created by your sister Brooke’s husband, Jason Miller."
Ethan felt a cold spike of alarm in his chest. "Jason? Jason was twelve years old fifteen years ago when those deposits started!"
"Precisely," David stated. "Which means Jason's name was added to that trust much later. The original creator of that trust fifteen years ago... was a corporate legal firm representing Stuttgart Auto Systems."
Ethan froze. The coffee cup in his hand remained suspended in mid-air.
"My own company?" Ethan asked, his mind racing. "Why would my employer be wiring five thousand dollars a month to an offshore account linked to my family fifteen years before I was promoted to executive management?"
"Ethan," David said gravely. "Your father didn't die of natural causes in a private hospital fifteen years ago. Edward Miller was a senior chief engineer at Stuttgart Auto Systems in 2011. He was the lead investigator on a massive safety recall cover-up involving defective brake modules."
Ethan stood up from his desk, his heart slamming against his ribs.
All his life, he had been told that his father was a mid-level accountant who died of stomach cancer. He had never known that his father had worked for the very same automotive giant where Ethan now served as Chief Regional Director.
"My mother told me he was an accountant..." Ethan whispered.
"She lied about that too, Ethan," David revealed. "Your father discovered a multi-million-dollar defect cover-up at Stuttgart Auto Systems in 2011. And three weeks before he was scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury... he died suddenly in his sleep."

"And the monthly five thousand dollar offshore payments?" Ethan demanded, his voice trembling with white-hot rage.
"Hush money," David stated flatly. "Paid directly by a corrupt former executive at Stuttgart Auto Systems to your mother, Diane Miller, to keep your father's private engineering journals sealed forever."
