Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY COUNCIL

-9
The Moretti family council met in a room with no windows.
Adrian had always hated it.
Salvatore believed windows made men look outside when they should listen.
The conference table was black walnut.
Eight chairs.
Vittoria at one end.
Adrian traditionally opposite.
Dominic at his right.
Family trust attorney Lucian Greco.
Two senior relatives.
An independent trustee representative.
Dr. Marcus Heller had refused.
Vittoria replaced him with no doctor physically present, only historical medical certifications.
That weakened.
She did not know how much.
Adrian arrived without cane.
For six months he had used one occasionally during dizzy spells.
Today none.
Vittoria’s face tightened.
Dominic sat beside Adrian rather than mother.
That mattered.
Lucian Greco opened.
“This meeting concerns succession continuity under Clause Eighteen.”
Adrian smiled.
“Say what it actually concerns.”
Greco adjusted glasses.
“Potential permanent transfer of voting authority due prolonged incapacity.”
“Mine.”
“Yes.”
“Based on?”
“Medical records spanning approximately thirty-six months.”
“Not thirty-six yet.”
Silence.
Trustee representative looked.
Greco said:
“Effective date proposed seven days hence.”
“So you want approval before condition occurs.”
“Conditional approval.”
Adrian leaned back.
“Convenient.”
Vittoria spoke.
“Your health is not a courtroom.”
“No.”
“But your paperwork may be.”
She stared.
Then Greco presented history.
Missed meetings.
Delegations.
Doctor letters.
Adrian’s own emails.
Dominic’s temporary management.
No lies necessarily.
Context poisoned.
Then Vittoria said:
“Adrian, this is not punishment.”
“What is it?”
“Protection.”
“From?”
“Yourself.”
Old.
Adrian looked trustee.
“I request independent current medical assessment before any vote.”
Vittoria answered:
“Your sudden objection itself demonstrates volatility.”
There.
Every resistance pathology.
Adrian smiled.
“I expected that.”
He placed Dr. Vale report.
Toxicology.
Independent testing.
Trustee read.
Vittoria did not move.
Greco’s face changed.
“This alleges…”
“Substances inconsistent with prescribed treatment in nightly beverages.”
Dominic placed his signed statement.
“I administered them.”
Room froze.
Vittoria turned.
“Dominic.”
He did not look.
“On Dr. Rinaldi’s instructions and Mother’s direction.”
Senior uncle swore.
Vittoria laughed.
“My son is protecting himself from financial crimes.”
“Yes,” Dominic said.
“I committed those too.”
That silenced.
No scapegoat.
“I’ll answer separately.”
Then:
“But Adrian’s condition was induced.”
Greco looked ill.
Adrian produced Project Lantern drafts dated before symptoms.
Then Rinaldi cooperating declaration.
Then emails.
The trustee representative stopped meeting.
“We cannot proceed.”
Vittoria slammed palm.
“You can.”
“No.”
“We have years of evidence.”
“Contaminated.”
“Not all.”
“Enough.”
Adrian watched mother.
Her control slipping.
Then she smiled.
Cold.
“Fine.”
She opened red folder.
“Then let us discuss Elias Carter.”
Adrian’s pulse changed.
Vittoria distributed documents.
DNA.
Paternity.
Salvatore's affair.
Draft will.
Senior relatives erupted.
“Salvatore had another son?”
“When?”
“Who knew?”
Vittoria looked at Adrian.
“You want truth? Have it.”
She weaponized scandal.
Then:
“Elias infiltrated company and stole confidential records.”
“No,” Adrian said.
“He audited.”
“Without board approval.”
“On Dad’s.”
“Your father was senile.”
“Convenient.”
Vittoria’s voice rose.
“He intended to hand fifteen percent of family trust to bastard.”
Dominic flinched.
Adrian looked at trustee.
“Language aside, draft exists.”
Trustee said validity requires review.
Good.
Then Vittoria delivered blow.
“Elias Carter was blackmailing Salvatore.”
Hannah? Is there evidence? She produced bank transfers from Salvatore to Elias.
Monthly $20k.
Could look like hush.
Adrian frowned.
“Payment.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Silence.”
Maybe actually compensation for audit.
Invoices? Elias company. Vittoria omitted.
Adrian had copies.
He produced engagement agreement.
Payment for forensic audit.
Her claim collapsed partly.
Then:
“He died because he ran.”
Adrian’s blood chilled.
“What does that mean?”
Vittoria realized too late.
“From responsibility.”
“No.”
“You said he died because he ran.”
Silence.
Dominic looked.
“Mother.”
Vittoria corrected:
“He was paranoid.”
But phrase lingered.
Then trustee said:
“This meeting is adjourned.”
Vittoria stood.
“No one leaves.”
Security door?
Her guards outside.
Mateo anticipated.
Adrian’s lawful security with authorities nearby.
No armed standoff required.
Door opened anyway.
Rebecca Shaw entered with two investigators and trust counsel? Authorities cannot just barge private without warrant. But they could be waiting with search/arrest warrant based evidence. Let's say warrants had issued for Rinaldi/financial evidence; Vittoria not yet arrested? Could be served.
“Mrs. Moretti,” Rebecca said, “law enforcement has a warrant regarding electronic devices and records connected to Dr. Rinaldi and Moretti trust fraud.”
Vittoria stared at Adrian.
“You brought them.”
“Yes.”
“You brought federal agents into family.”
“Yes.”
Senior uncle whispered curse.
Adrian answered:
“Family brought crime into family.”
Good.
Agents served.
No guns drawn.
No theatrics.
Then Carlo Ventresca disappeared.
His phone off.
That was dangerous.
Authorities searching.
Mateo received call from Hannah’s protective detail.
Vehicle had been seen circling.
Carlo?
Maybe associate.
Hannah and Lily moved.
Then another message on Adrian’s phone.
From Carlo.
You want truth about Carter, come alone.
Location.
Old Moretti chapel.
Mateo said:
“No.”
Adrian agreed.
He forwarded to investigators.
Carlo expected mafia response.
Instead law.
That broke pattern.
Then Carlo sent photo.
Not Hannah.
A photograph from three years ago.
Elias Carter seated across from Vittoria.
Date night before crash.
On back text digital:
Ask your mother what she offered him.
Adrian stared.
What offer?
Maybe Elias was not simply victim.
Could have considered deal.
Vittoria looked at phone from across room?
She saw reaction.
“What did Carlo send?”
Adrian turned.
“Why did you meet Elias night before he died?”
Her face changed.
No answer.
“Mother.”
She sat slowly.
“He came to me.”
“What did he want?”
“Protection.”
“From who?”
She whispered:
“Dominic.”
Dominic stood.
“What?”
Adrian looked between.
Vittoria smiled faintly.
“Did you think this would stay simple?”
Of course not.
She claimed Elias had evidence Dominic embezzled and believed Dominic would kill to protect.
She offered Elias money to leave country.
He refused.
Why?
He wanted tell Adrian.
Then did she order Carlo to follow?
“Yes.”
“To retrieve documents.”
“Did you tell him harm?”
“No.”
“Then why payment after crash?”
“Because Carlo fixed aftermath.”
“What does fixed mean?”
“Recovered file before police.”
There.
Obstruction.
“Did Carlo cause crash?”
“I don’t know.”
Could be lie.
Carlo alone knows.
Then Dominic said:
“I never threatened Elias.”
Vittoria laughed.
“You met him in parking garage.”
“To give documents!”
“Did he trust you?”
“No.”
She turned Adrian.
“Your brother was desperate. Elias knew.”
Ambiguity.
Adrian hated.
Then agents took devices.
Vittoria not yet arrested, but ordered preserve.
Meeting dissolved.
Outside, Dominic grabbed Adrian.
“She’s lying.”
“Maybe.”
“You believe her?”
“I believe evidence.”
That hurt Dominic.
Good.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown.
Carlo.
He answered on speaker with investigators tracing.
“Adrian.”
“Carlo.”
“You’re using police now.”
“Yes.”
Salvatore would spit on you.
“Salvatore is dead.”
“Because your mother was too proud to call ambulance.”
There.
Adrian went still.
Carlo knew.
“Elias?”
Silence.
“Did you kill him?”
Carlo laughed softly.
“No.”
“Then?”
“He killed himself trying to get away.”
Maybe crash during chase.
“What does that mean?”
“I followed. He saw. Drove too fast in rain.”
Carlo claims no contact.
Could be true.
“Did you touch car?”
“No.”
“Why run?”
“Because he knew what your mother did to Salvatore.”
There.
“What did he know?”
Carlo said:
“He had Rinaldi’s audio.”
Not yet found?
Maybe hidden.
“Where?”
“Ask rabbit.”
Second memory card maybe we already found, but maybe one more? Too much. He laughs.
Then line ended.
Investigators traced approximate.
Adrian looked at gray rabbit? Lily had it elsewhere.
Another secret perhaps.
But Hannah called.
“I found something.”
Of course.
Lily had ripped rabbit while playing in hotel.
Inside stuffing, a tiny voice recorder slid out.
Not memory card.
Actual.
Elias had hidden three layers.
Maybe too contrived but dramatic.
Hannah pressed play.
Salvatore’s last dinner.
Vittoria and Rinaldi.
May you like
Recorded somehow by Elias? He was not present? Maybe Elias planted recorder earlier after suspicions. Yes.
The dead had been speaking all along.
