Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT HER SONS TO FEAR HER

-8

Vittoria Moretti believed fear was a form of education.

Adrian learned that from Dominic.

Their childhood had not been physically brutal.

There were no beatings.

No locked closets.

Nothing outsiders could point to.

Instead, Vittoria removed warmth.

When twelve-year-old Adrian embarrassed her at charity dinner, she did not speak to him for three days.

When Dominic lied about school, she moved him from family table to kitchen meals for a week.

When either boy cried, she asked:

“Do you want people to know they can control you?”

Salvatore was loud.

Vittoria was quiet.

Everyone feared Salvatore.

The boys feared disappointing their mother more.

“Why didn’t I see it?” Adrian asked.

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Because she liked you better.”

That surprised.

“She needed me broken.”

“Because she liked you better.”

“How does that make sense?”

“You were heir.”

Dominic poured water.

No tea.

“She thought you were hers.”

Adrian remembered.

Mother choosing suits.

Schools.

Friends.

Criticizing girlfriends.

Calling independence disrespect.

Dominic continued.

“When you started talking about legitimizing company, she took it personally.”

“As?”

“Rejection.”

Adrian frowned.

“Of criminal business?”

“Of her.”

Vittoria came from a family whose power rested on old alliances.

She had married Salvatore partly to merge networks.

The underworld was not separate from identity.

When Adrian wanted exit, she heard:

Everything you built is shameful.

Not his intention.

But emotion does not require accuracy.

Then Elias.

Proof Salvatore loved another woman.

Worse, a son.

A competent son.

An auditor.

A threat to family story.

“Did Mother know Elias was Dad’s son?”

Dominic still struggled.

“Apparently.”

“Would that motivate his death?”

“Maybe.”

“What did Carlo say?”

“Nothing.”

“Did you ask?”

“Once.”

“And?”

“He said Carter should have known what family he was touching.”

That sounded confession adjacent.

Then:

“When?”

“Week after crash.”

“Why didn’t you tell Hannah?”

Dominic exploded.

“Because I was twenty-eight and terrified!”

Silence.

He continued.

“And because by then I was already dirty.”

There.

Dominic had skimmed.

Signed.

Lied.

Once implicated, Vittoria owned him.

“Mother taught us one thing,” Dominic said.

“What?”

“If people know your worst act, they own every act after.”

Adrian considered.

“That’s only true if you keep hiding.”

Dominic laughed.

“Easy now.”

“No.”

Adrian looked.

“It wasn’t easy for three years.”

Dominic lowered eyes.

Good.

Then threat trace.

Authorities linked message routing to a disposable phone purchased by Carlo associate.

Carlo became priority.

Hannah and Lily placed under official protective measures.

Vittoria did not know exact location.

Good.

Then Dr. Rinaldi formally cooperated through attorney.

He turned over encrypted email archive.

Vittoria’s messages rarely explicit.

“Adjust regimen.”

“Symptoms need consistency.”

“He is too alert this week.”

One message:

Council requires 36 continuous months. Any interruption resets medical narrative.

There.

Intent.

Another:

Dominic is becoming weak. Remind him what Bellhaven records would mean.

Blackmail.

Another after Elias death:

Carter file is closed. His widow must never connect Adrian’s symptoms to his work.

This was strong.

Then after Hannah hired:

Who approved H. Carter?

Rinaldi didn't know.

Vittoria discovered nine months ago?

Wait Dominic said he recognized at Christmas. Vittoria maybe only saw surname after some report. The email could be recent.

She likely investigated.

Then:

Remove quietly after succession.

Adrian’s hands tightened.

Not kill necessarily.

Fire/relocate.

Still.

Then biggest.

Four years ago, before Salvatore died:

If S. signs acknowledgment of Carter, family council will fracture. This cannot happen before succession is secured.

No murder instruction.

But motive.

Then Carlo's records.

Mateo found payment from Vittoria private trust two days after Elias crash:

Crisis management bonus.

To Carlo-owned security company.

Amount $250,000.

Suspicious.

Carlo could claim legitimate.

Investigators would pursue.

Then old traffic camera and vehicle data? Three years old perhaps archive impossible. But insurance investigation found Elias’s brake system? Avoid actionable. Official crash due mechanical failure. New examination? Car destroyed. However maintenance invoice shows car inspected two days earlier, no issue. Carlo's company had accessed parking garage. Strong circumstantial.

Then one surviving witness.

Garage attendant.

Remembered two men near Elias car.

One looked like Carlo.

Not certainty.

Enough for investigation.

Then Adrian’s mother made move.

She invited family council early.

Tomorrow.

Not seven days.

Can she invoke before full 36 months? Maybe preliminary resolution to activate on exact date. She wanted signatures now.

“Why early?”

Dominic said:

“She’s scared.”

Good.

Meeting at old Moretti social club, not estate.

Adrian agreed.

Rebecca prepared.

Independent physician Dr. Vale would issue statement Adrian currently competent but not necessarily erase prior 36 months. The trust requires current certification at effective date. If he is competent before permanent transfer, clause cannot trigger.

Vittoria needed keep him medically “incapable.”

How?

Rinaldi refused to certify now.

She found another doctor?

Dr. Marcus Heller, neurologist who saw Adrian twice.

He had received Rinaldi summaries.

Would he certify based on records?

Potentially.

Adrian’s lawyers notified him new evidence. He withdrew any incapacity opinion until reevaluation.

Another pillar collapsed.

Vittoria responded by producing psychiatric letter.

Dr. Helen Baird.

She had once evaluated Adrian during severe sleep deprivation and wrote “paranoid ideation.”

Now she too learned toxicology.

She amended:

Symptoms may have been substance-induced; prior conclusions not reliable for current capacity.

Vittoria losing.

Then she came to Adrian’s room that evening.

No knock.

Like mother.

He was reading.

She closed door.

“Do you hate me?”

No preamble.

Adrian looked.

“Should I?”

Her eyes glistened.

“I saved you.”

He almost laughed.

“From what?”

“Your father.”

“What?”

“He was going to hand you a dying empire and let you dismantle it while enemies watched.”

“So you made me sick.”

“I made you pause.”

Three years.

“Pause?”

“You were arrogant.”

“You poisoned my sleep.”

Her face hardened.

“Don’t use dramatic words.”

“Drugs in tea.”

“Treatment.”

“Without consent.”

“You would never consent to help.”

There.

Then:

“Dominic told.”

“Enough.”

She closed eyes.

“My weak son.”

“You made him weak.”

“No.”

“He was born hungry.”

Cruel.

“Elias?”

Her face changed.

Ah.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Your father humiliated me.”

“Elias existed.”

“Because Salvatore could not keep himself out of a secretary’s bed.”

Elena Carter had been his assistant.

“Did you kill Elias?”

Vittoria’s eyes flashed.

“No.”

“Did you order Carlo?”

“No.”

“Did you know Carlo followed?”

Silence.

“Mother.”

“He was retrieving stolen documents.”

“From Elias.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you pay after?”

“For discretion.”

That is damning.

“Discretion about a dead man?”

“About our name.”

Then:

“Did you kill Dad?”

Her face broke.

“No.”

“Did you delay ambulance?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He was drugged.”

“By Rinaldi.”

“He was hysterical.”

“He was dying.”

“I did not know.”

“Rinaldi says he warned.”

“He always protects himself.”

Maybe true.

“Did you ask Dad to sign while collapsing?”

Vittoria looked away.

“Yes.”

Adrian felt grief.

“You loved him?”

“More than you understand.”

“Then why?”

“Because love does not make men wise.”

There.

Her philosophy.

She decided for everyone she loved.

“Lily.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What about her?”

“She is your granddaughter.”

Vittoria stared.

Then understood.

Elias.

“No.”

“She is Salvatore’s granddaughter.”

“No.”

“DNA.”

For first time, Vittoria lost composure.

She stood.

“That child is not Moretti.”

“She is blood.”

“She is Carter.”

“And Moretti.”

“No.”

Why such panic?

Not just affair.

Inheritance.

If Salvatore’s draft/codicil validated, Lily might have claim against trusts.

Vittoria whispered:

“Your father was sick.”

“He knew.”

“He was guilty.”

“Maybe.”

“He wanted to punish me.”

“By acknowledging his son?”

“By giving strangers what belonged to my children.”

Adrian stared.

“Elias was your husband’s child.”

“Not mine.”

There.

A boundary turned hatred.

Then:

“Hannah.”

Vittoria’s mouth tightened.

“She came into my house.”

“My house.”

Vittoria slapped him.

One strike.

Adrian did not move.

Her face immediately changed.

Maybe shock at self.

He tasted blood.

She whispered:

“You sound like him.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“He also thought owning the chair made him king.”

She stepped back.

“You have no idea what I protected you from.”

“Then tell me.”

She looked at him.

“No.”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Secrets again.”

Vittoria turned.

At door:

“Tomorrow, you will sign.”

“No.”

“If you don’t, everything your father built becomes evidence.”

“What does that mean?”

She looked back.

“I kept copies.”

Of criminal operations.

Adrian already expected.

“If I fall, Moretti Shipping falls with me.”

There.

Mutual destruction.

She believed business would force Adrian to protect her.

For years, family survival justified silence.

Now Adrian answered:

“Then it falls.”

Vittoria froze.

He continued.

“If keeping the company requires me to stay poisoned, Elias dead, and Lily erased—let it burn legally.”

His mother stared as if he had become stranger.

Maybe he had.

She left.

Mateo emerged from adjacent monitoring room? Wait conversation recording legality. Better Rebecca/attorney not hidden. But Adrian didn't need record? He could testify, maybe security cameras hallway. Let's not rely.

Dominic had been outside.

He heard slap maybe.

He entered after.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“She’ll destroy everything.”

“Maybe.”

“You’re willing?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Are you?”

Dominic stared.

His Bellhaven wealth.

Freedom.

Family name.

Then nodded.

“Not willingly.”

Good.

May you like

“But yes.”

Tomorrow, for first time, both brothers would walk into family council knowing survival of Moretti empire was less important than whether they remained human.
