Chapter 7 - SEVEN DAYS BEFORE THEY TOOK HIS NAME

-7
Once Adrian understood the thirty-six-month clause, everything accelerated.
The Moretti Legacy Trust had been written by Salvatore’s father.
Old-fashioned.
Paranoid.
Designed for war, imprisonment, disappearance, illness.
Clause 18:
If the controlling beneficiary is certified medically incapable of fulfilling executive duties continuously for thirty-six months, the designated successor trustee may assume permanent voting authority subject to physician certification and family council approval.
Designated successor:
Dominic Moretti.
But only if Vittoria, as family trust supervisor, certified transition.
There.
Dominic got title.
Vittoria got control over process.
Project Lantern was not intended to last forever.
It had a finish line.
Seven days away.
On that date, Adrian’s temporary delegations could become permanent.
Even if he later recovered, reversing would require litigation, medical reviews, board votes, and trust challenges.
By then, Bellhaven and other entities could move assets.
Vittoria would own reality before Adrian could explain.
“Why not just forge it?” Mateo asked.
“Because too much money.”
Exactly.
The Moretti trust held legitimate assets worth hundreds of millions.
Banks.
Institutional partners.
Auditors.
A permanent transfer needed facial legitimacy.
Three years of medical records.
Specialists.
Missed meetings.
Documented tremors.
Memory issues.
Psychiatric observations.
Adrian himself had written emails saying:
I can’t continue like this.
Maybe Dominic should handle daily matters.
Real statements generated by induced condition.
That was elegant evil.
Make victim create evidence.
Then Hannah asked:
“What happens in seven days?”
“Council meeting.”
Adrian looked at Dominic.
His brother had surrendered Bellhaven records and agreed to cooperate privately.
“Mother scheduled it.”
Dominic nodded.
“Annual family review.”
Actually permanent succession.
“Who knows?”
“Mother. Rinaldi. Family trust lawyer Lucian Greco. Carlo probably.”
“Board?”
“Only after.”
Adrian considered.
“We let meeting happen.”
Mateo frowned.
“Risk.”
“We need her to present.”
“Why?”
“Because right now she can say old documents are drafts.”
Good.
If Vittoria formally invoked clause based on false medical incapacity after knowing Adrian recovered, stronger evidence.
But no reckless entrapment.
They would have legal counsel and independent monitors. Adrian coordinated with federal and state investigators? Due mafia theme, maybe he contacts U.S. Attorney through outside counsel, offering evidence. He wants legitimacy. We can have former prosecutor attorney Rebecca Shaw manage.
Rebecca Shaw entered story.
Forty-five.
Former federal prosecutor.
Now white-collar attorney.
Adrian hired her quietly.
She listened without fear.
Then said:
“You understand turning this over may expose Moretti businesses too.”
“Yes.”
“Criminal ones.”
“Yes.”
“Your own decisions.”
“Yes.”
Dominic looked shocked.
Adrian did not.
“If I want clean hands after this, I don’t get to choose which dirt becomes visible.”
That was choice.
Rebecca nodded.
Authorities agreed to observe legal documents and preserve evidence; they would not let Adrian use violence.
Good.
Then Lily.
Hannah wanted leave estate immediately.
Adrian agreed.
Safe house? Not "mafia safe house" maybe private hotel under protection.
Lily refused.
“Bunny lives here.”
“No.”
Hannah knelt.
“We’re going on vacation.”
“To where?”
“Somewhere with pancakes.”
“Okay.”
Children.
Before leaving, Lily walked to Adrian.
“You look not tired.”
“I’m pretending.”
“Why?”
“Grown-up stuff.”
She frowned.
“Bad answer.”
“Yes.”
Then she hugged his leg.
First time.
Adrian froze.
Hannah watched.
Lily whispered:
“Lion sleeps.”
His throat tightened.
“Sometimes.”
“Bunny watches.”
Adrian looked at battered rabbit.
Elias had literally made it carry truth.
“Take Bunny.”
“Obviously.”
She left.
Estate became colder.
Without toddler footsteps, every room felt like conspiracy.
Then Vittoria arrived from Manhattan unexpectedly.
One day early.
She entered breakfast room in cream coat.
Kissed Adrian’s cheek.
“My darling.”
He had not seen her in person since discovering.
His body reacted before mind.
Love.
Childhood.
Her perfume.
Her hand on his fevered forehead.
Then audio:
Exhaustion makes men doubt themselves.
Both true.
She looked carefully.
“You seem better.”
“Good morning to you too.”
“You slept?”
“A little.”
Dominic entered.
Their eyes met.
He had to perform.
Vittoria smiled.
“Both my boys.”
Adrian almost felt sick.
Then she looked around.
“Where is little girl?”
“Hannah took days off.”
Her gaze sharpened.
“Why?”
“Family.”
“What family?”
Adrian smiled.
“Hers.”
Vittoria did not like unknown.
“Lily is amusing.”
“Is she?”
“She wanders.”
There.
“Children do.”
“She should be supervised.”
“I’ll tell Hannah.”
Vittoria looked at Dominic.
Tiny.
Searching.
Did he find rabbit?
Dominic shook barely perceptibly? Adrian saw.
Maybe performance.
Then mother sat.
“Rinaldi says you canceled appointment.”
“I wanted break.”
“That’s irresponsible.”
“I’m tired of doctors.”
“Exactly why you need them.”
Adrian smiled.
“You chose excellent ones.”
She froze.
Half second.
Then:
“I chose the best.”
“I know.”
Breakfast.
Vittoria discussed council.
“Next week.”
“I’ll attend.”
Her spoon stopped.
“Adrian.”
“Yes?”
“The meeting concerns your health.”
“Then I should attend.”
“Trust rules allow representation.”
“I’m representing myself.”
She laughed softly.
“You can barely finish board meetings.”
“I finished Monday.”
“Dominic said you overexerted.”
Adrian looked brother.
Dominic lowered gaze.
Good performance.
Then Vittoria reached across table.
“My son.”
Her voice almost tender.
“You do not have to prove strength.”
That sentence would have comforted him last month.
Now:
“What if I’m strong?”
She stared.
“Then I will be happiest woman alive.”
Lie.
Maybe not fully.
Perhaps she wanted son alive.
Just not free.
People can love and cage.
Then:
“Drink your tea tonight.”
Adrian’s pulse changed.
She had never personally said that.
“Why?”
“Rinaldi says consistency.”
“Yes.”
Her eyes held his.
“For one more week.”
There.
One more week.
She said it naturally.
Maybe meaning until council.
Adrian heard countdown.
After breakfast, she went to chapel.
Dominic entered Adrian’s study twenty minutes later.
“She knows something.”
“What?”
“She asked where Carter woman went.”
“Expected.”
“She asked me if rabbit was still in house.”
Adrian stared.
Direct.
“She knows key.”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell?”
“No.”
“What did you say?”
“That Lily took it.”
Vittoria would assume evidence moved with Hannah.
Danger.
“We need Hannah protected.”
Already.
Then Dominic said:
“Mother called Carlo.”
Mateo tracked.
Carlo Ventresca left Providence heading south.
Toward Hannah’s protected location?
Maybe.
Adrian immediately informed security and authorities.
Hannah moved again under police/private protection.
No vigilante.
Then Adrian received unknown text.
Photo.
Lily and Hannah outside hotel from earlier that morning.
Someone had found.
Message:
Seven days is a long time for children.
Adrian’s blood went cold.
Vittoria?
Carlo?
Unknown.
Then:
Sign willingly and they go home.
There.
Threat.
Adrian stared.
No more ambiguity.
His mother’s plan had shifted from medicine to leverage.
He showed Rebecca Shaw.
“Do not respond.”
“I want them arrested now.”
“We need locate sender.”
“I don’t care.”
“You will.”
She looked directly.
“If you move violently, you validate every file describing you as unstable and dangerous.”
That was true.
Vittoria had built trap where his anger became evidence.
Adrian sat.
Breathed.
Then phone buzzed again.
A voice message.
Not threat.
Lily.
Hannah had sent through secure channel.
“Mr. Moretti, hotel pancakes are bad.”
He laughed unexpectedly.
Then Lily:
“Mama says don’t be mad.”
Too late.
“Bunny says lion should use brain.”
Hannah in background:
“I did not say that.”
Lily:
“I said.”
Adrian closed eyes.
A three-year-old reminding mafia boss not to become exactly what enemies expected.
He forwarded threat to authorities.
Then did hardest thing he had ever done.
Nothing.
He waited.
May you like
And in Moretti family, patience had always been mistaken for weakness.
This time, it became the weapon.
