Chapter 11 - VITTORIA MORETTI’S LAST WEAPON

-11
Vittoria’s arrest happened quietly.
No handcuffs in ballroom.
No screaming.
Agents arrived at her attorney’s office after she agreed to surrender.
She wore navy.
Pearls.
Looked like woman attending museum board meeting.
Adrian watched only through news footage once.
Then turned off.
Her lawyer issued statement:
Mrs. Moretti categorically denies intentionally harming her husband or sons and maintains that all medical decisions were undertaken in good faith based on physician advice.
Rinaldi’s attorney responded within hours:
Dr. Rinaldi acted under intense pressure from Vittoria Moretti.
Everyone chose self-preservation.
Expected.
Then Vittoria used last weapon.
Files.
Thousands.
Encrypted archive stored through foreign legal service? No need details. Her lawyer produced selected records implicating Moretti Shipping executives—including Adrian—in past illegal conduct.
Some true.
Adrian had inherited operations at twenty-eight.
He had signed things.
Authorized payments he now regretted.
He could not claim innocence.
Rebecca Shaw asked:
“Do you still want full cooperation?”
“Yes.”
“You may face charges.”
“I know.”
“Loss of licenses.”
“Yes.”
“Company.”
“Yes.”
“Freedom?”
“Possibly.”
He thought of three years spent half-alive preserving a throne.
“No throne is worth this.”
Good.
Dominic made same choice reluctantly.
His exposure worse financially.
Bellhaven.
False invoices.
Obstruction.
He negotiated cooperation.
Would likely serve time.
He asked Adrian:
“Will you visit?”
“If you’re convicted?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know.”
Dominic smiled sadly.
“Fair.”
No automatic brother redemption.
Then Vittoria requested jail call to Adrian.
He refused first.
Second.
Third.
Finally attorney advised one monitored call might clarify.
He accepted.
Her voice:
“Adrian.”
“Mother.”
“You look well on television.”
“I am.”
“Congratulations.”
No warmth.
Then:
“You are destroying your father’s name.”
“Dad helped.”
Silence.
“You think recording absolves him?”
“No.”
“He cheated.”
“Yes.”
“He built crimes.”
“Yes.”
“He lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Yet I am monster.”
“I didn’t say.”
“You handed me to government.”
“You handed yourself.”
She laughed.
“You sound like prosecutors.”
“Occupational change.”
Then:
“Do you love me?”
Adrian closed eyes.
“Yes.”
She became quiet.
Maybe not expected.
“Then help.”
“No.”
There.
Simple.
“Freeze legal cooperation.”
“No.”
“Protect family trust.”
“No.”
“Dominic will go to prison.”
“Probably.”
“You?”
“Maybe.”
“And Hannah Carter gets what? Satisfaction?”
“This isn’t for Hannah.”
“Lily?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Do not use her name.”
Vittoria smiled through phone.
“I knew you would become attached.”
“She’s my niece.”
“She is Salvatore’s mistake.”
“No.”
“She will always be reminder.”
“To you.”
“Yes.”
Honest.
Then:
“Did you know Elias was your husband’s son when he died?”
“Yes.”
“Did you order Carlo to chase him?”
Silence.
Attorneys listening.
She should not answer.
She said:
“I told Carlo to get my papers back.”
“Were they yours?”
“No.”
There.
“Did you know pursuit could hurt?”
“I did not tell him to hurt.”
“Did you care?”
Silence.
Then:
“I cared about my sons.”
Adrian laughed sadly.
“Which ones?”
She hung up.
No closure.
Then Adrian’s own legal reckoning.
He entered deferred/cooperation agreement regarding certain corporate conduct? To avoid glamor, he took responsibility, paid penalties, stepped down from some entities, sold criminal-affiliated holdings.
Moretti Shipping restructured under independent board.
Adrian retained legitimate minority/control? Maybe he can stay CEO after compliance? Better he steps back one year, independent oversight.
He did.
People called him weak.
He slept.
Interesting.
His health improved quickly after toxic exposure ended but not instantly.
Tremor took months.
Memory gaps remained.
Dr. Vale warned recovery nonlinear.
Some nights seven hours.
Some three.
Nightmares.
No chemical.
Adrian went to therapy voluntarily.
He told nobody except Hannah eventually.
Then Lily.
She and Hannah moved to a modest apartment outside Boston.
Adrian visited only when invited.
First visit:
Lily opened door.
“Uncle Adrian!”
Hannah winced at volume.
Adrian brought no gifts.
Good.
He brought groceries? Might feel patronizing. He brought book Lily requested.
Story about lion and rabbit.
Lily said:
“Mine is better.”
“Yes.”
Hannah offered coffee.
Not tea.
They both noticed.
Awkward.
Then they talked.
Elias’s estate/trust.
Salvatore’s draft will legal status uncertain because unsigned? There was a signed codicil perhaps. Need provide rightful inheritance eventually. The locker contained maybe executed separate irrevocable trust document? We haven't introduced. Could discover attorney retained signed trust. Let's say Salvatore had signed separate child trust for Elias’s unborn daughter before death, independent of will. Family attorney failed to fund due Vittoria suppression. Investigators found.
Amount:
$12 million? Too huge maybe. Salvatore wealthy. Lily entitled to trust maybe $8.4 million.
Hannah refused initially.
“It’s hers,” Adrian said.
“From Moretti money.”
“Legal investments.”
Still.
“If you don’t want, independent trustee holds until adult.”
That she accepted.
No Adrian control.
Good.
Hannah asked:
“Did Elias know?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t tell?”
“He wanted no name.”
“Then why trust?”
“Salvatore insisted.”
She cried.
“My husband died trying to protect people who didn’t know he was family.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did he love Salvatore?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did Salvatore love him?”
Adrian thought.
“I think he was trying too late.”
Similar to everyone.
Late love.
Late truth.
Then Lily climbed into Adrian’s lap without permission.
Hannah almost said.
Adrian froze less now.
She opened book.
“Read.”
He did.
Halfway, she fell asleep.
Adrian stared.
Her ability to sleep anywhere remained offensive.
Hannah whispered:
“She trusts you.”
“I know.”
“That scares me.”
“It should.”
He did not ask trust.
“Why?”
“I’m Moretti.”
“No.”
Hannah looked.
“Because everyone she trusts could hurt her.”
That was better.
She nodded.
Then Adrian said:
“I’ll earn what you allow.”
No romance yet.
Good.
Then Vittoria’s trial preparation revealed final file:
An insurance policy? Not.
A letter written by Salvatore to Adrian but never delivered.
Vittoria kept.
Adrian opened.
Son,
Your mother loves you most when you agree with her. I have enabled that because fighting her was harder than leaving you to manage it.
Adrian cried.
Salvatore taking responsibility.
Then:
Do not inherit my cowardice with my companies.
And:
Elias is your brother. I should have told you years ago.
There.
He had intended.
Final:
If you want to save family, stop confusing family with business.
Adrian folded.
That became roadmap.
He could not save Moretti empire by saving all its crimes.
May you like
He could save people by letting empire change.
Vittoria’s last weapon—the family name—was losing power.
