Chapter 8 - The Departure

-1250-

The federal indictment came down with the speed and precision of a lightning strike. By Tuesday afternoon, financial news networks across the country were broadcasting breaking news banners: Tech and Real Estate Titan Roberto Silva Surrenders to Federal Authorities Over Historic Logistics Fraud and Cover-Up.

The media circus outside the Manhattan federal courthouse was deafening. Flashing camera bulbs illuminated the grey stone steps as Roberto walked up them, flanked not by an army of high-priced defense attorneys, but by Marcus Vance alone. He wore a simple charcoal suit, his expression composed, his head held high. He didn't hide behind sunglasses or duck away from the microphones. He owned every step he took.

The legal proceedings moved with terrifying efficiency. Because Roberto pleaded guilty unconditionally, waived all preliminary evidentiary challenges, and handed over the unredacted logistics files from his private safe, the judge granted him a brief period of personal affairs management before his formal sentencing hearing scheduled for the following month.

He returned to the mansion on Meadowbrook Lane that same evening, knowing his time in the home was severely limited.

Sofía was sitting at the kitchen island when he walked through the front doors, her small fingers tracing the edges of a Braille book while María prepared dinner nearby. At the sound of his footsteps, Sofía’s head snapped up, a bright, hopeful smile spreading across her face.

“Daddy!” she called out, standing up and stumbling slightly over the barstool before rushing across the marble floor toward him.

Roberto dropped to his knees just in time to catch her in his arms, burying his face in her dark curls as a choked sob escaped his throat. He held her tighter than he had ever held anything in his life, memorizing the warmth of her small body, the scent of her shampoo, the sound of her laughter.

“You’re home early, Daddy,” Sofía said happily, wrapping her arms around his neck. “María made chocolate chip pancakes, just like I asked!”

Roberto pulled back gently, taking her small hands in his. He looked into her sightless eyes, knowing she couldn't see the tears streaming down his cheeks, but feeling the gentle, intuitive brush of her thumb against his cheekbone.

“Sofía, sweetheart,” Roberto began, his voice thick with emotion. “Daddy needs to talk to you about something very important.”

María quietly stepped away from the kitchen counter, walking toward the hallway and giving them privacy, though she kept a watchful, protective eye from a distance.

“Are you going on another business trip?” Sofía asked, her lower lip trembling slightly. “You said you wouldn't travel for a long time.”

“Not a business trip, my love,” Roberto said softly, forcing a steady, reassuring tone into his voice. “Daddy made some very big mistakes a long time ago—mistakes that hurt people, and mistakes that broke the rules. And because of that, I have to go away for a while to fix them.”

“Where are you going?” she whispered.

“To a place where I have to think about what I did, and learn how to be a better man,” Roberto explained, stroking her hair. “But you are going to be safe here. María is going to stay right here with you in this house. Nobody will ever hurt you again, Sofía. I promise you that with all my heart.”

“Will you come back?” she asked, her voice cracking as a tear slipped down her cheek.

Roberto leaned forward, pressing his forehead gently against hers. “I will come back, Sofía. I swear to you, when I walk back through these doors, I will be the father you deserve.”

That night, Roberto didn't sleep in the master suite. He spent the entire night sitting in the rocking chair beside Sofía’s bed, holding her hand long after she drifted off to sleep, listening to the steady, peaceful rhythm of her breathing. He knew that the empire he had spent forty years building was gone, that his wealth would be drained by restitution fines and legal settlements, and that his name would forever carry the stain of a federal conviction.

Yet, as the first rays of dawn touched the window sill, Roberto felt a profound, unbelievable lightness in his chest. For the first time in seven years, the ghost of Route 9 was finally laid to rest.
