Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

-1215-

The seconds stretched into an eternity as Roberto crossed the marble floor, his boots making a heavy, deliberate sound that echoed through the vaulted ceilings of the grand living room. Vanessa’s hand dropped slowly to her side, her fingers twitching nervously against the expensive silk of her red dress. The sophisticated socialite who commanded rooms full of politicians and philanthropists had vanished, leaving behind a cornered, sweating impostor realizing her game was over.

“Roberto, please,” Vanessa began, her tone shifting in a fraction of a second from venomous rage to a trembling, high-pitched simulation of wounded innocence. She rushed toward him, her hands reaching out to clutch his lapels. “You don't understand. It’s been such a stressful week, the charity gala planning is overwhelming, and María... María was being entirely insubordinate, and the child knocked over my antique crystal vase—it was an accident, everything just got out of hand—”

Roberto didn't flinch. He didn't pull her close, nor did he offer the reassuring embrace she desperately sought. Instead, he raised his hand and gently, firmly pushed her wrists away, stepping past her as if she were nothing more than an unpleasant piece of furniture blocking his path.

Vanessa stumbled back, her eyes widening in sheer panic. She had spent two years perfecting the art of manipulation, convincing him that her occasional coldness was merely the burden of sophistication, that her reluctance to hold Sofía was just a boundary issue. She had played the long game, securing her name on joint bank accounts, embedding herself in his social circle, and positioning herself as the undisputed queen of his empire.

She had never expected to be caught red-handed.

Roberto ignored her completely, walking past her toward the sofa where Sofía was still curled into a tight ball, her small hands trembling as she clutched her battered stuffed rabbit, Barnaby, against her chest.

“Sofía,” Roberto said, his voice instantly softening, shedding the lethal coldness it held for Vanessa and filling with a deep, trembling warmth as he knelt down beside the couch. “Sweetheart, it’s Daddy. I’m right here.”

At the sound of his voice, Sofía let out a choked sob and threw herself forward, her small arms wrapping frantically around his neck. Roberto caught her instantly, pulling her against his chest, burying his face in her dark curls as a hot wave of guilt crashed over him.

“Daddy,” she whispered into his shoulder, her voice breaking. “She... she said bad words. She said I was a burden. She said you only kept me around because you felt guilty about Mommy.”

The words felt like a physical blow to Roberto’s chest, driving the air from his lungs. He remembered the exact conversations Vanessa had whispered in the dark, the clever justifications she had used to distance him from his daughter, the subtle ways she had tried to isolate Sofía to the nursery under the guise of "fostering independence." He had believed her lies because he wanted to believe she was building a home.

Behind him, María slowly pushed herself up from her knees, her worn hands smoothing down her apron. She didn't speak, but her tired eyes met Roberto’s over Sofía’s small shoulder, filled with a silent, heavy validation of everything she had endured in silence to protect the child.

“María,” Roberto said softly, standing up while keeping Sofía securely cradled in his arms. “Thank you.”

“Mr. Roberto,” María murmured, bowing her head respectfully. “I was just... I was just making sure the little one was safe.”

“You have always kept her safe,” Roberto said, his voice thick with emotion. He turned his cold, piercing gaze back toward Vanessa, who was now standing near the grand piano, her chest heaving as she tried to reconstruct a narrative that had already been shattered beyond repair. “And starting tonight, no one in this house will ever have to shield her from you again.”

Vanessa’s face twisted back into a desperate, defensive snarl. “You can’t do this, Roberto! We are married! You think you can just throw me out like trash because of a hysterical housekeeper and a blind kid who doesn't even know what’s going on? You signed a prenuptial agreement, yes, but my lawyers have already ensured my stake in your corporate assets—if you cross me, I will drag your name and your precious company through every court in New York!”

Roberto stared at her—truly stared at her—for the first time since they had met at a charity auction two years ago. He saw the greed, the cold calculation, and the bottomless vanity lurking beneath the designer clothes and the polished smile.

“You think this is about money, Vanessa?” Roberto asked quietly, walking slowly toward her, his height and presence towering over her. “You think because I am a wealthy man, my family can be bought, abused, and discarded like corporate stock?”

May you like

He stopped just a foot away from her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying intensity.

“Get out,” Roberto whispered. “Pack your bags, strip off the jewelry I bought you, and walk out that front door before I stop acting like a civilized businessman and start acting like a man whose daughter was threatened in her own home.”
