Chapter 3 - The Locked Drawer

Vanessa didn't leave immediately. Instead, a dangerous, reckless glint sparked in her eyes—the desperate defiance of a predator realizing the cage door was slamming shut. She let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that echoed harshly against the marble pillars of the foyer.
“You think you can just dismiss me, Roberto? Just like that?” Vanessa hissed, taking a step closer, her posture straightening as she shed the last pretense of remorse. “You arrogant fool. Do you honestly believe I entered this marriage on a whim? I knew everything about you before you even noticed me at that gala. I knew about the accident. I knew about your guilt over Sofía’s mother. And most importantly... I knew about what you buried in the study.”
Roberto froze. The suffocating weight of a long-forgotten secret—one he had guarded with his life and millions of dollars in legal non-disclosure agreements—seemed to drop out of the air and press down on his shoulders.
Sofía, sensing the sudden tension in her father’s body, buried her face deeper into his neck, letting out a soft, frightened whimper. Roberto gently stroked her hair, motioning with his free hand for María to step forward.
“María, take Sofía up to the nursery,” Roberto instructed, his voice remarkably steady despite the cold panic rising in his chest. “Draw her a warm bath, read her favorite story, and stay with her until she falls asleep. Do not leave her door.”
María nodded solemnly, her hands gently taking Sofía from Roberto’s arms. As the housekeeper guided the little girl toward the grand staircase, Roberto watched them ascend before turning his full, lethal attention back to his wife.
“What did you say?” Roberto asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
Vanessa smirked, the panic in her eyes momentarily masked by a triumphant, venomous grin. She turned on her heel and walked purposefully toward the grand mahogany double doors of Roberto’s private study—the one room in the entire mansion she was strictly forbidden from entering.
“You thought your security systems, your private guards, and your encrypted servers were enough to hide the past, didn't you?” Vanessa taunted over her shoulder, her fingers reaching for the brass handle of the study door. “You thought buying my silence with galas and emerald necklaces would keep the skeleton locked away forever. But while you were busy running your empire, I had plenty of time to explore.”
Roberto lunged forward, his reflexes honed by years of athletic discipline and survival in the ruthless corporate world. He caught Vanessa’s wrist just as her fingers brushed the brass handle, spinning her around and pinning her back against the heavy mahogany wood with enough force to rattle the glass panels of the hallway display cases.
“If you touch that door,” Roberto said, his voice shaking with a fury that terrified even Vanessa, “I swear to God, Vanessa, you will leave this house in an ambulance rather than a taxi.”
Vanessa gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she stared up into his eyes, seeing a darkness she had never suspected existed beneath his polished exterior. But even in pain, she didn't stop smiling.
“It’s too late, Roberto,” she choked out, her voice straining against his grip. “The digital copies were uploaded to a secure cloud server an hour ago. If I don't deactivate the dead man’s switch by midnight, everything goes straight to the federal prosecutor’s office, the national news outlets, and every major business partner you have.”
Roberto’s grip slackened slightly, the color entirely draining from his face. For the first time all evening, the master of the empire felt the ground completely vanish beneath his feet.

“What... what did you find?” Roberto whispered, the terrifying realization washing over him that Vanessa wasn't just a gold-digger who hated his daughter—she was a professional extortionist who had systematically infiltrated his life with a pre-planned agenda.
“The truth about the night Sofía’s mother died,” Vanessa whispered back, her eyes shining with malicious triumph. “The truth about the forged medical reports, the bribe paid to the state coroner, and the real reason why your wife’s brakes failed on Route 9.”
