Chapter 5 - The Midnight Transfer

-1225-
The clock on the grand marble mantelpiece in the living room ticked downward with agonizing precision. 11:15 PM. Forty-five minutes until the automated dead man’s switch would release the encrypted files to the federal prosecutor’s office, media outlets, and board members.
Vanessa sat comfortably in the velvet armchair, sipping a glass of twenty-year-old scotch she had poured herself from Roberto’s private decanter. Her legs were crossed, her posture relaxed, her eyes glittering with the smug satisfaction of a victor who had successfully checkmated a king. She had her laptop open on the mahogany coffee table, the glowing screen reflecting the bank transfer portal waiting for Roberto’s authorization.
“Thirty minutes left, darling,” Vanessa glanced up, a mocking smile playing on her lips. “I wouldn't want you to miss the deadline. Federal prison cells are notoriously drafty this time of year, and I hear white-collar criminals don't get custom-tailored suits.”
Roberto stood across the room by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out into the pitch-black gardens where the security spotlights cut sharp beams through the falling autumn rain. He hadn't touched his scotch. His phone rested quietly on the table beside him, its screen dark.
He hadn't wired the money. He hadn't signed the deed to the Canandaigua Lake property.
“You’re cutting it close, Roberto,” Vanessa warned, her smile fading slightly as she checked the system timer in the corner of her laptop screen. “Ten million dollars is a drop in the bucket for a man of your net worth. Why are you risking everything over pocket change? Pride? Stubbornness?”
“Vanessa,” Roberto said without turning around, his voice completely calm. “Have you ever wondered why nobody ever successfully blackmailed me before?”
Vanessa paused, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. “What are you talking about?”
“In business, men like me don't survive by ignoring risks,” Roberto turned slowly, his dark eyes fixed on her with an unsettling serenity. “When you spend decades fighting at the top of the food chain, you learn a fundamental rule: never leave a threat alive long enough to bite you twice.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened, a sudden prickle of unease rippling down her spine. “What is that supposed to mean? The files are already queued on an encrypted cloud server in Zurich. If anything happens to me, or if you try any heroics, the release triggers automatically.”
“Zurich?” Roberto raised an eyebrow, a faint, cold smirk touching the corner of his lips. “You really think a first-class extortionist relies on a commercial Swiss cloud provider without verifying their infrastructure?”
Vanessa slammed her laptop shut, standing up abruptly. “What did you do?”
At that exact moment, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion swung wide open.
Two men in charcoal federal suits, flanked by local county sheriff deputies, strode into the foyer with quiet, authoritative precision. Leading the group was a woman Roberto knew very well—Special Agent Karen Vance of the FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division, Marcus Vance’s younger sister, and one of the finest cyber-security investigators in the country.
Vanessa stumbled back, her face turning chalk-white as she stared at the federal badges gleaming under the hallway lights.
“Vanessa Kensington, also known as Vanessa Sterling, also known under three different aliases in three different states,” Special Agent Vance announced clearly, stepping into the living room with a digital tablet in her hand. “You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion, and unauthorized access to classified corporate records.”
“No! This is illegal!” Vanessa screamed, lunging for her laptop on the coffee table. “The dead man’s switch! I didn't deactivate it!”
Agent Vance snapped her fingers, and one of the deputies instantly moved forward, pinning Vanessa’s arms behind her back and clicking the steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp, decisive snap.
“You mean the dead man’s switch that was successfully intercepted and rerouted by our cyber-crimes unit forty-five minutes ago?” Agent Vance asked, tilting the tablet screen so Vanessa could see the pulsing green diagnostic code indicating a neutralized threat. “Turns out, Swiss servers aren't quite as impenetrable when you have a federal warrant and a direct fiber-optic line into their routing hubs.”
Vanessa thrashed against the deputies, her face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated fury and disbelief. As they dragged her screaming toward the front door, she twisted her head back toward Roberto, her eyes blazing with venom.
“You set me up!” she shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “You knew! You knew all along!”
May you like
Roberto didn't flinch. He watched her disappear into the rainy night, accompanied by the red and blue flashing lights of the federal vehicles parked outside.
When the heavy doors finally closed, the mansion fell back into a profound, suffocating silence.
