Chapter 8 - The Cryptic File-8

By midnight, we had relocated to a secure, undisclosed penthouse apartment in downtown Brooklyn, guarded twenty-four hours a day by a elite team of federal marshals and my most trusted private security personnel.
Leo was fast asleep in a warm bedroom, safe and peaceful.
In the high-tech dining room, Agent Sarah Miller and her team of federal cyber-forensic analysts had connected Liam's titanium hard drive to a air-gapped laptop.
The room was silent except for the clicking of keys and the hum of cooling fans.
"It's heavily encrypted," Agent Miller reported, studying the green lines of code scrolling across the screen. "It's using military-grade AES-256 bit encryption tied to a biometric or custom alphanumeric key. If we try to brute-force it, the drive will execute a self-deletion protocol."
Elena stepped forward from the kitchen, holding a warm cup of coffee. She looked at the laptop screen.
"Try 'Bravo-6-November'," Elena said softly.
Agent Miller looked up, surprised. "What's that?"
"It was the callsign of the tactical team Liam led during his first deployment in Afghanistan," Elena explained, her voice filled with quiet nostalgia. "He told me that whenever he was in the darkest places on earth, that code reminded him that there was always a light waiting at home."
Agent Miller typed the code into the prompt and hit enter.
ACCESS GRANTED.
The folder structure expanded across the screen, revealing hundreds of scanned documents, audio recordings, video files, and financial manifests spanning five years.
As Agent Miller opened the primary folder labeled OPERATION BLACK TIDE, the room fell into an icy, horrifying silence.
Liam had documented everything.
It wasn't just Julian and Beatrice who were involved. Sterling Global Logistics had been weaponized by a syndicate of rogue military contractors, international arms dealers, and high-ranking political figures in Eastern Europe.
They were using our commercial cargo ships to transport unauthorized weapons caches out of US military bases, hiding them inside humanitarian aid crates bound for conflict zones.
And at the very top of the financial distribution tree sat a name that made my blood run completely cold.
It wasn't Julian.
It wasn't Captain Cole.
May you like
It wasn't even Beatrice.
The primary beneficiary of the offshore accounts, holding a sixty-percent controlling interest in the illegal smuggling syndicate, was my late wife's brother—my brother-in-law, Senator Charles Vance.
