Chapter 13 - A New Normal

-13-

Spring arrived in the northern suburbs with a sudden, vibrant explosion of color, melting the winter snows across the forty acres of Dominic Cray’s estate and turning the sprawling gardens into a sea of blooming azaleas and emerald-green lawns.

Inside the main mansion, the oppressive chill of suspicion and paranoia that had once lingered in the hallways under Victor Strand’s tyrannical management was completely gone. In its place was a renewed, disciplined energy. The staff moved with quiet efficiency, respectful, loyal, and fully aware that their employer was no longer deaf, detached, or vulnerable to internal betrayal.

My life had undergone a transformation so radical that I sometimes had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

My official title was Head of Administrative Security, but in practical terms, my office was located just down the hall from Dominic’s, allowing me to manage the estate’s daily operations while keeping a flexible schedule that accommodated Marcus.

Speaking of Marcus—at three and a half years old, he had officially become the unofficial mascot and most pampered resident of the entire estate.

On a bright Tuesday afternoon, I sat at my mahogany desk reviewing the weekly logistics reports when the heavy oak door swung open without a knock.

Marcus marched into the office carrying a massive plastic dinosaur in one hand and a half-eaten apple in the other, wearing a pair of miniature security sunglasses that one of Dominic’s guards had apparently gifted him.

“Mommy, look,” Marcus announced proudly, holding up the plastic Tyrannosaurus Rex. “Rexy is guarding the kitchen.”

Before I could answer, a tall, imposing figure appeared in the doorway behind him. Dominic was dressed in a crisp black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking entirely relaxed yet commanding as always. He had a faint smudge of green crayon on his shoulder—undoubtedly the result of an impromptu art session in the east wing playroom.

“I can confirm,” Dominic said, his deep, resonant voice rich with amusement, “that Rexy has successfully secured the refrigerator against unauthorized snack acquisition. Although I had to negotiate a treaty involving two graham crackers to pass.”

I couldn't help the smile that spread across my face. I stood up from my desk, walking over to scoop Marcus up into my arms. He giggled, throwing his arms around my neck and pressing the plastic dinosaur against my shoulder.

“You’re spoiling him, Mr. Cray,” I said, looking up at Dominic.

“Dominic,” he corrected gently, using the name he had insisted on ever since the night at the Alpine lodge. He reached out, gently straightening the miniature sunglasses on Marcus’s face. “And I’m not spoiling him. I’m simply investing in our most effective operative.”

Marcus grinned up at Dominic. “Can we go see the horses, Dom?”

Dominic’s expression softened instantly—a transformation that still amazed me every time I witnessed it. The ruthless mafia boss who commanded syndicates and brought international syndicates to their knees had a profound soft spot for a three-year-old boy who called him Dom.

“Only if you finish your apple first,” Dominic negotiated, raising an eyebrow.

Marcus immediately took a massive, exaggerated bite out of the apple, chewing furiously with a determined nod.

Dominic chuckled, looking across the boy's head to meet my eyes. The silent understanding between us was deeper than words. We had walked through the fire together, surviving betrayal, assassins, and a criminal conspiracy that could have easily destroyed us both. But out of the darkness of that stormy night, a strange, unbreakable bond had been forged—a foundation built not on fear or coercion, but on trust, survival, and a shared future.

“Go wait by the conservatory doors, partner,” Dominic told Marcus softly. “I’ll be right there.”

Marcus scrambled out of my arms, hitting the floor running with his toy dinosaur clutched tightly in his fist, his joyous laughter echoing down the high-ceilinged corridor.

When he was out of earshot, Dominic stepped closer to me, the air between us suddenly shifting from playful to intimate.

“The federal prosecutors finalized the last of the asset seizure paperwork this morning,” Dominic said quietly, his dark eyes fixed on mine. “The Vanguard’s remaining European assets have been entirely dismantled. There’s no one left looking over their shoulder for us anymore.”

I let out a soft sigh of relief, feeling a weight I hadn't fully realized I was carrying finally lift from my chest. “It’s really over, isn't it?”

May you like

“It’s over,” Dominic confirmed, raising one hand to gently brush a stray strand of hair away from my face. His touch was warm, deliberate, and sent a sudden, electric shiver straight down my spine. “Which means... for the first time in three years, I’m not just listening to the world again. I’m actually living in it.”

I looked up into his intense, unwavering gaze, realizing with a sudden, breathless certainty that the chapter we were writing now had nothing to do with mafia empires or criminal conspiracies. It was about a new beginning—for all three of us.
