Chapter 12 - The Return to the Estate

-12-

The private helicopter sliced smoothly through the cold, pre-dawn air, its rotor blades beating a steady, rhythmic cadence against the dark winter sky as we soared high above the snow-covered mountain ridges. Below us, the jagged peaks and dense pine forests of the northern range faded away into the vast, slumbering expanse of the eastern seaboard.

Inside the heated cabin, the atmosphere was remarkably quiet.

I sat in the plush leather seat by the window, resting my head against the cool glass, watching the distant lights of the sprawling metropolitan suburbs twinkling far below. The adrenaline-fueled chaos of the alpine summit, the tension in the Vanguard conference room, and the sudden, total collapse of an international criminal syndicate all felt like scenes from a movie I had watched rather than lived through.

Dominic sat across the aisle, reviewing a final encrypted summary report on his tablet. The harsh blue light of the screen cast sharp shadows across his striking features. He looked calm—not the tense, coiled spring of a man trapped in silence and betrayal, but the grounded, absolute composure of a king who had successfully defended his throne and cast out the usurpers.

He glanced up, noticing my reflection in the window, and locked his tablet with a soft click, sliding it into the side pocket.

“You’re quiet,” he observed, his voice rich and steady in the enclosed cabin.

I turned my head, offering him a faint, tired smile. “Just processing everything. A week ago, I was worried about whether I could afford groceries and rent. Tonight, I helped dismantle a global syndicate inside an alpine lodge.”

Dominic gave a slow, thoughtful nod. “Life has a way of expanding your horizons when you least expect it.”

“What happens now?” I asked, my voice carrying a quiet curiosity. “With Victor in federal custody, the Vanguard leadership neutralized, and their assets frozen... what happens to the empire?”

“It gets restructured,” Dominic replied simply. “From the ground up. Every route, every subsidiary, every contract is being audited by people I actually trust. The rot is gone, Elena. The house is clean.”

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark eyes fixing on mine with an intense, unyielding sincerity that made my breath catch slightly in my throat.

“And as for you,” Dominic continued, his voice dropping an octave, “you never have to worry about rent, or groceries, or babysitters ever again. The position of head of administrative security is yours for as long as you want it. And if you ever decide you want something else—to study, to travel, to build a life completely outside of this world—my resources are behind you, unconditionally.”

I stared at him, touched by a depth of loyalty and gratitude I hadn't expected from a man whose reputation in the underworld was built entirely on fear and ruthlessness.

“Thank you, Dominic,” I whispered, using his first name for the first time without hesitation.

A faint, genuine smile touched the corners of his lips—a rare expression that softened his hard features entirely.

“Don't thank me yet,” he said quietly. “We still have to face the most terrifying member of the household when we get back.”

I blinked, momentarily confused before the realization hit me. “Marcus.”

“Exactly,” Dominic chuckled, leaning back in his seat. “He’s probably dismantled half the toys in the East Wing and turned my security detail into his personal royal guard by now.”

I let out a soft laugh, the last remaining tension in my shoulders finally melting away. The thought of my little boy—the tiny, fearless explorer whose innocent curiosity had changed the course of both our lives—brought a warm, overwhelming wave of relief and joy to my heart.

In the distance, ahead of the helicopter’s flight path, the familiar iron gates of the estate came into view, their massive stone pillars standing tall against the horizon, guarding the sprawling forty acres of our new home. The storm had finally passed, leaving the world outside quiet, pristine, and ready for whatever came next.
