Chapter 10 - The Alpine Lodge

-10-

The wind howling down from the jagged peaks of the northern mountain range whipped swirling drifts of powdery snow across the narrow, unplowed access road leading to the alpine lodge at Lake Geneva. Towering stands of black pine stood like silent sentinels along the precipitous drop-offs, their branches heavy with winter frost under a starless, ink-black sky.

Inside the reinforced cabin of the armored SUV, the digital dashboard glowed with muted green navigational lines. I sat in the back seat beside Dominic, our breath pluming in faint wisps of white vapor as the vehicle’s auxiliary heater struggled against the bitter sub-zero temperatures outside.

Up ahead, through the swirling curtain of snow, the sprawling silhouette of the alpine lodge loomed against the dark mountainside. Massive timber beams, slate-shingled roofs, and floor-to-ceiling glass panels glowed with warm amber light from within, looking more like a luxury ski resort retreat than the clandestine command post of an international criminal syndicate.

“We’re five minutes out,” the lead security operative in the front seat reported, his eyes flicking constantly between the rearview mirror and the encrypted tactical map on his console.

Dominic sat quietly in the darkness of the back seat, adjusting the cuffs of his heavy black wool coat. His expression was impossibly still, his mind clearly calculating every angle, every exit, and every possible variable of the confrontation waiting for us inside. Since regaining his hearing in the conservatory days ago, his senses had sharpened into a lethal instrument; he could hear the steady purr of the SUV’s heavy engine, the crunch of packed snow beneath our tires, and the faint, rhythmic clicking of his own tactical watch.

“Remember the briefing,” Dominic said, his voice low and steady, cutting through the silence of the cabin. “The Vanguard leadership believes Victor Strand is running late due to weather conditions in the city. They are expecting a routine financial transfer and an update on the port syndicates. We play our cards close until we’re inside the inner sanctum.”

“And Marcus?” I asked, my voice betraying the nervous tremor I couldn't entirely mask. Even though my son was safely secured back at the main estate under the protection of a heavily armed detail, the motherly dread gnawing at my stomach refused to subside.

Dominic turned his head, his dark eyes meeting mine in the dim light. “Marcus is safer at the estate than anywhere else on earth right now. My best men are stationed at every entry point. No one gets near him.”

I nodded slowly, drawing a deep breath to steady my nerves. I knew he was right. Staying behind at the mansion was the only logical choice, but the distance between us felt agonizingly vast out here in the frozen wilderness.

The SUV glided smoothly past a pair of heavy iron security gates that opened automatically upon receiving our spoofed transponder signal, pulling up along the sweeping gravel driveway of the lodge. Several luxury European sedans and high-end all-terrain vehicles were already parked near the massive carved-oak front entrance, their polished surfaces reflecting the flickering glow of gas-powered carriage lamps mounted along the stone facade.

“Park around back near the service loading bay,” Dominic instructed quietly. “We don't need a grand entrance just yet.”

The vehicle swung around the flank of the sprawling timber structure, pulling into the shadowed recess of the delivery bay. The engine died, and the sudden silence of the mountain wilderness rushed in to fill the void, punctuated only by the soft, steady hiss of falling snow.

Dominic checked the magazine of his Sig Sauer one last time before slipping the weapon into his holster, then pushed the heavy door open.

“Stay close,” he muttered, extending a gloved hand to help me out onto the icy pavement.

The cold hit us like a physical blow, freezing the moisture in our lungs. But there was no time to dwell on the weather. Dominic’s security team fanned out instantly, securing the perimeter while Dominic and I moved toward a discreet side entrance that led directly into the lodge’s service corridors.

The heavy metal service door clicked open under the touch of a universal override key one of the operatives carried. We slipped inside into the warm, dimly lit subterranean hallways, leaving the freezing wilderness behind us.

As we navigated the labyrinth of back corridors toward the main conference hall where the Vanguard’s Grand Council was currently gathered, I realized with absolute clarity that there was no turning back. We had breached the syndicate’s inner sanctum, and by the time the night was over, either Dominic Cray would reclaim the entirety of his empire, or the Vanguard would bury us in the snow.
