Chapter 9 - THE GALA OF THE VULTURES

-8

The grand ballroom of the Marina Bay Sands was a shimmering monument to excessive wealth and unbridled corporate power. Crystal chandeliers shaped like cascading waterfalls hung from the soaring ceiling, casting a dazzling light over hundreds of Asia’s elite business leaders, politicians, and syndicate-backed corporate raiders dressed in designer gowns and immaculate tuxedos.

At the center of the room, surrounded by an entourage of obsequious sycophants and armed security guards, stood Viktor Chen. He raised a glass of vintage champagne, laughing heartily as a local government minister whispered something in his ear.

The heavy double doors at the far end of the ballroom slowly swung open.

The ambient chatter of the crowd tapered off into a tense, uneasy silence as the ballroom’s master of ceremonies froze mid-sentence, staring down at the digital guest manifest glowing on his tablet.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC stammered into his wireless microphone, his voice echoing nervously across the vast room. "Unscheduled guest... Mr. Hadrian Kane of Kane Global Logistics."

Viktor Chen’s champagne glass paused halfway to his lips. His cold, reptilian eyes snapped toward the entrance.

Through the parting crowd walked Hadrian. He wore a razor-sharp charcoal tuxedo, his posture towering and absolute, flanked only by Marcus, who moved with the silent, lethal grace of a shadow. Hadrian did not look like a man whose empire was under attack; he looked like an executioner walking into an empty room.

The crowd instinctively parted, creating a wide, open corridor straight down the center of the ballroom leading directly to Viktor Chen.

Hadrian stopped five feet away from the syndicate leader, his face a mask of absolute, frozen ice.

"Mr. Kane," Viktor Chen said, recovering his composure with a smooth, practiced smile that didn't reach his dead eyes. He set his champagne glass down on a passing waiter's tray. "What an unexpected and... dramatic surprise. I wasn't aware you traveled all the way to Singapore just to congratulate me on our regional expansion."

"I didn't travel halfway across the world to congratulate you, Viktor," Hadrian said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant baritone that carried easily across the silent, listening ballroom. "I traveled here to return something you dropped in my garden."

Viktor’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second. "I have no idea what you're talking about, Mr. Kane. My business dealings are entirely legitimate, registered, and transparent."

"Are they?" Hadrian stepped closer, sliding his hand into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a heavy, encrypted flash drive and tossed it carelessly onto the white linen tablecloth right in front of Viktor’s champagne glass. "That drive contains the complete, unredacted financial trail of your offshore shell company, Apex Maritime Holdings. It details every bribe you paid to port authorities, every illegal cargo manifest you smuggled through our Pacific corridors, and every wire transfer you sent to a disgraced corporate raider named Marcus Vance to fund Vanguard Global."

The color drained entirely from Viktor Chen’s face. The polished, untouchable corporate raider vanished, replaced by a cornered animal realizing his cage had just been locked.

"You're bluffing," Viktor hissed, his voice pitching up slightly, losing its smooth composure. "You don't have jurisdiction here. This is Singapore. The authorities—"

"The authorities are currently executing federal search warrants on your primary shipping terminals in the port downstairs, led by an international maritime task force I personally mobilized two hours ago," Hadrian interrupted, his eyes boring straight through Chen's soul.

Viktor lunged forward, his hand clawing toward the flash drive on the table.

Before his fingers could even graze the metal casing, Marcus flashed forward with lightning speed, grabbing Viktor’s wrist in a bone-crushing grip and twisting it behind his back with effortless violence. Viktor let out a sharp cry of agony, slumping hard against the edge of the table as the surrounding guests gasped in horror and scrambled backward in panic.

Hadrian leaned down, whispering directly into Viktor’s ear while the syndicate leader writhed in pain.

"You tried to choke my distribution network, Viktor. You tried to touch my world," Hadrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying whisper. "Consider this your eviction notice from the global market. Your syndicate is dead. And you're going to spend the rest of your life answering questions in a windowless holding cell."

Hadrian straightened up, adjusted his cuffs, and turned his back on the paralyzed crowd, walking calmly out of the grand ballroom with Marcus trailing closely behind him. The war for the Pacific was over before the first shot was even fired.
