Chapter 7 - THE SHADOW OF SINGAPORE

-6

The golden light of midday bathed the estate in a warm, comforting glow, but inside the private study, the digital screens cast a cold, clinical blue light across Hadrian’s face. He was staring at an encrypted satellite feed originating from the financial district of Singapore.

The collapse of Vanguard Global had sent shockwaves through the global shipping market, but it had also exposed a much deeper, more dangerous syndicate operating beneath the surface of legitimate trade. For months, mysterious shell corporations based out of Southeast Asia had been quietly buying up distressed maritime debt, positioning themselves to launch a hostile takeover of Hadrian’s Pacific shipping corridors.

The door to the study opened quietly, and Marcus—the security chief, not the disgraced COO—stepped inside, closing the heavy wood securely behind him.

"You wanted a status update on the perimeter, Mr. Hadrian?" Marcus asked, his posture rigid and professional.

"Forget the perimeter for a moment, Marcus," Hadrian said, gesturing to the chair opposite his desk. "Look at this data feed. Tell me what you see."

Marcus walked over, leaning his weight against the back of the leather chair as he studied the complex web of shell companies, offshore bank accounts, and corporate restructuring filings glowing on the monitor. His brow furrowed deeply, the lines on his forehead hardening.

"The names on these secondary holding accounts... they aren't registered to Vanguard," Marcus observed, his voice dropping into a low, analytical tone. "They're registered under a master trust called Apex Maritime Holdings. That's an unregistered syndicate operating out of the Singapore free-trade zone."

"Precisely," Hadrian murmured, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. "Clara wasn't just working for Marcus Vance and Vanguard Global. She was a junior operative being groomed by a much larger, invisible hand. Vanguard was just the proxy. The real war is waiting for us across the Pacific."

"They're coming for the Pacific shipping lanes," Marcus stated, the reality of the threat sinking in. "If they control the western ports, they control your entire distribution network. You'll be choked out of the international market within six months."

"Not if we strike first," Hadrian replied, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. He reached out and tapped a key on his keyboard, pulling up a secondary financial ledger. "They think they're hunting a wounded animal because I've been distracted by domestic matters. They think I'm weak."

"What's your play, Mr. Hadrian?"

"We don't wait for them to make a move in our waters," Hadrian said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "We take the fight directly to their doorstep. Book a private charter flight to Singapore for tomorrow morning. You and I are going to pay a very personal visit to the board of Apex Maritime Holdings."

May you like

Marcus nodded slowly, a grim, approving smile spreading across his face. "I'll pack the secure communication gear and prep the extraction team. When the syndicate thinks they're executing a trap, they usually forget to look behind them."

As Marcus left to handle the travel arrangements, Hadrian leaned back in his chair, looking up at the family portrait on the wall. Sorrel’s bright, smiling face stared back at him. He whispered a silent promise to the empty room: I will burn their entire empire to ash before I ever let anyone threaten your world again.
