Chapter 8 - The Burning Estate

-8-

The roar of the explosion shook the foundations of the Barrington chateau so violently that the crystal chandelier in the grand foyer shattered into a million sparkling diamonds on the marble floor.

Lena stumbled, clutching Nora tightly against her chest as Alistair grabbed her arm, dragging her down the back service stairs toward the subterranean motor pool. The acrid smell of C4 plastic explosives and burning timber instantly filled the air, cutting through the scent of pine and snow.

"Keep moving!" Alistair shouted over the blaring security alarms. "They bypassed the perimeter grid faster than anticipated! The front gates have been compromised!"

Behind them, the stone walls of the mansion groaned, followed by a second, massive concussive blast that blew out the arched windows of the west wing. Orange and red flames licked hungrily up the limestone facade, turning the snowy night sky into a hellish canvas of fire and smoke.

They reached the motor pool in the underground basement. Two armored SUVs idled with their engines roaring, exhaust pipes pumping white smoke into the damp air. Vincent Marsh sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, his right shoulder heavily bandaged and soaked in fresh blood, an assault rifle resting across his lap.

"Get in! Get in!" Vincent barked, coughing violently as he slammed the armored door shut behind them.

Alistair pushed Lena and the baby into the back seat of the second vehicle, slamming the heavy door before vaulting into the driver's seat himself. He slammed the gearshift into drive, and the armored SUV surged forward, smashing through a secondary wooden security gate and plunging out into the dark, stormy woods of the estate.

Through the bulletproof rear window, Lena watched the magnificent French provincial chateau—her golden cage, her fortress, her terrifying new home—engulfed in a wall of raging, unstoppable fire.

"Where are we going?" Lena cried out over the screeching tires and the sound of gunfire echoing from the perimeter walls behind them. "Alistair, where can we possibly go where they won't find us?"

Alistair didn't take his eyes off the treacherous, snow-covered road ahead. His hands gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled precision, his jaw set in a hard, grim line.

"To the docks," Alistair said, his voice dropping into a dark, razor-sharp baritone. "The one place in Chicago where the police, the politicians, and the North Side cannot touch us. We are going to the heart of the machine."

As the SUV tore out onto the highway and sped toward the freezing shores of Lake Michigan, Lena looked down at Nora, who was sleeping peacefully amidst the chaos, entirely unaware that her mother had just stepped off the edge of the world and into the abyss.
