Chapter 14 - The Empire of Ice

-14-

Six months later, the boardroom on the fourth floor of Zenith Tower looked entirely different.

The minimalist white marble and brushed chrome had been replaced by rich mahogany paneling, leather armchairs, and a roaring marble fireplace that chased away the chill of the Chicago spring.

Lena Cruz—now holding the title of Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global Holdings—sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, reviewing the quarterly shipping manifests for the European ports. She wore an immaculate charcoal-gray pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a sophisticated chignon, her fingers adorned with a single, heavy diamond ring that had once belonged to Clara Cruz.

The door to the private office clicked open, and Alistair Vance walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee. He placed one gently beside her hand before walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to look out over Michigan Avenue.

"The municipal tax restructuring has been approved by the City Council," Alistair reported, his deep baritone echoing off the wood panels. "Chicago is officially ours, legally and economically."

"Good," Lena replied without looking up from her tablet. "Make sure the community development funds for the West Side are disbursed by Friday. I promised Mrs. Alvarez her hip surgery clinic would be fully funded, and I intend to keep my word."

Alistair chuckled, walking back over and leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk. He looked down at her with that intense, unwavering gaze that had once terrified her, but now felt like home.

"You run this city with an iron fist, Lena," Alistair noted, a hint of pride in his voice. "Your mother would have been proud."

"My mother taught me how to survive in the shadows," Lena said, looking up to meet his eyes. "You taught me how to step out into the light."

Just then, the frosted glass door of the office swung open, and two-year-old Nora toddled in, holding a wooden toy boat in one hand, followed closely by Mrs. Gable.

"Mama! Look what Grandpa Alistair made for me!" Nora cheered, running across the Persian rug and throwing her arms around Lena’s knees.

Lena scooped her daughter up, kissing her cheek, while Alistair walked over, placing a hand gently on Nora’s shoulder and smiling down at them both.

The war was over. The blood debts were paid. And the empire of ice had finally learned how to thaw.
