Chapter 13 - The Settlement

-13-

Forty-eight hours after the destruction of Arthur Sterling’s gunboat, the black freighter slipped quietly into a private, unmarked dock tucked away in the upper reaches of Canada’s Georgian Bay. The storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, piercing winter morning under a sky the color of polished steel.

The transition from the war zone of Lake Michigan to the quiet, snow-covered pine forests of the Canadian wilderness felt like stepping into another dimension.

Alistair led Lena and Nora down the gangplank of the ship, stepping onto a heated wooden pier where a sleek, black helicopter idled with its rotors spinning.

"Where are we?" Lena asked, clutching Nora tightly against her chest as the wind whipped her hair across her face.

"A safe house," Alistair replied, shielding her from the rotor wash as they approached the chopper. "Arthur Sterling is dead. His syndicate is headless. The North Side has surrendered their Chicago docks to my control. The war is over, Lena."

Lena stopped at the door of the helicopter, turning to face him. The morning sun caught the sharp angles of his face, highlighting the deep, unreadable shadows in his obsidian eyes.

"And what happens to us now?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Do we live here? In hiding? Am I your prisoner for the rest of my life?"

Alistair looked at her, his expression softening into something profound and terribly human. He reached out, his gloved hand gently cupping her cheek.

"You are never a prisoner here, Lena," he said softly. "You can take the private jet to Europe tomorrow. You can live in Paris, in London, in any city you choose. I will fund your life, protect your daughter, and ensure your name is never spoken in the underworld again."

Lena stared at him, feeling a sudden, heavy ache in her chest. The thought of running away—of taking the money and the safety and disappearing into the sunset—was what she had dreamed of on the cold floors of Racine Street.

So why did it feel like a hollow defeat?

"And you?" she whispered. "Where will you be?"

"I will be where I have always been," Alistair said, stepping back and opening the helicopter door for her. "Cleaning up the board, keeping the peace, and making sure nobody ever threatens my family again."

Lena climbed into the leather cabin of the chopper, settling Nora into her seat. She looked out the window at Alistair standing on the snowy tarmac, tall, imposing, and entirely alone against the vast expanse of the northern forest.

Before the door closed, Lena leaned out.

"I don't want to run anymore, Alistair," she called out over the roar of the turbine blades.

Alistair froze, his hand resting on the doorframe.

"Then stay," Alistair said, a slow, radiant smile breaking across his face—the first real smile she had ever seen him wear. "Build the empire with me."
