Chapter 7 - The Hidden Safe-7

The heavy front door clicked shut as Senator Vance and his security guards stepped back out into the night.

The black SUV purred to life in the driveway, its red taillights sweeping across the living room walls like blood before disappearing down the dark, country road.

Inside the house, the silence was suffocating.

Arthur collapsed onto his knees by the fireplace, burying his face in his hands, trembling uncontrollably. Eleanor was leaning against the wall, staring blankly at the ceiling, completely broken.

"We're ruined..." Arthur whimpered. "He's going to take Leo, Emma. He owns the police. He owns the judges. You can't fight Thomas Vance in this town. You never could!"

I walked over to the couch, sitting down beside Leo. My son reached out and grabbed my hand, his small fingers wrapping around mine.

"Mom," Leo whispered, his voice remarkably steady despite everything that had just happened. "Is that old man my grandfather?"

"His father was your grandfather, Leo," I said gently, looking into his clear, intelligent eyes. "That man is just a monster in a expensive suit."

"He said he was going to take me away," Leo said, looking straight into my eyes. "Is he?"

"Never," I promised him, kissing his forehead. "Not as long as I'm breathing."

I stood up and turned to my father. "Get up, Dad."

Arthur looked up, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks. "What?"

"Get up," I repeated, my tone sharp and commanding. "We have work to do. Where is the key to the old municipal archive building?"

Arthur blinked in confusion. "The archive building? Why do you need that? It's been abandoned for five years since the new city hall was built!"

"Because eleven years ago, before Julian fled, he didn't just leave documents in Chicago," I revealed, watching Arthur’s jaw drop once again. "He left a secondary hard drive—a physical backup of the plant's internal server data—hidden inside the old city engineer's safe in that building. And you're going to use your old master key to get me inside tonight."

Arthur shook his head violently, backing away. "No! No way! Thomas has security guards patrolling those old city buildings! If we're caught breaking in—"

"If we don't get that hard drive tonight," I cut him off, stepping right into his face, "Thomas Vance will strip me of my parental rights tomorrow, destroy my life, and raise your grandson to be just as ruthless and corrupt as he is. Is that what you want, Dad? Do you want Julian's story to repeat itself with Leo?!"

Arthur stared at me, his eyes wide with horror, looking back and forth between me and the quiet, auburn-haired boy sitting on the couch. For ten years, my father had been a coward. He had sacrificed his daughter, his integrity, and his peace of mind to save himself from Thomas Vance.

Slowly, painfully, Arthur wiped the tears from his eyes. He reached into his pocket, pulling out an old, rusted keyring.

"The side door lock hasn't been changed in twenty years," Arthur said, his voice trembling, but holding a new, desperate resolve. "I'll drive."
