Chapter 4 - The Threat Reborn-4

Eleanor slowly pulled herself up from the floor, shaking off the dust from her skirt. She looked at me with a profound, staggering realization washing over her face.

"That's why you said..." Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling. "That's why you told us on the porch ten years ago... 'If I end this pregnancy, it won't just affect me. It'll affect all of us.'"

"Yes, Mom," I said, a bitter tear finally slipping down my cheek. "If I had gotten an abortion like Dad demanded, I would have destroyed the only bargaining chip that kept Julian alive. And if I had stayed in this town, Thomas Vance would have eventually found out I was pregnant with his son's heir. I had to run. I had to let you hate me. I had to let you think I was a reckless, rebellious girl who threw her life away, because your anger was the only thing keeping us all safe!"

Arthur sat frozen, his chest heaving as the weight of my sacrifice crashed down upon his conscious.

For ten years, he had held his head high in this small town, boasting to his neighbors about how he had "cut off his disgrace of a daughter" to maintain his moral integrity. He had spent a decade playing the victim, complaining at the local diner about how ungrateful I was, while I was working sixteen-hour shifts, scrubbing floors, and studying by candlelight to feed the grandson he had tried to execute.

"Emma..." Arthur whimpered, reaching a trembling hand toward me. "I... I didn't know... I'm so sorry, sweetheart... I'm so sorry..."

"Don't touch me," I snapped, stepping back out of his reach. "I didn't come back here for your apology, Dad. An apology doesn't pay ten years of rent. An apology doesn't erase the nights I cried myself to sleep wondering why my own father thought I was trash."

"Then why did you come back?" Eleanor asked, her eyes searching mine desperately. "Why bring Leo back now?"

Before I could answer, the sharp, sudden sound of tires crunching over the gravel driveway outside cut through the house.

Bright headlights swept through the living room windows, blinding us for a brief moment as a heavy black SUV pulled up right behind my sedan.

Arthur’s face instantly lost every drop of color it had managed to regain. He scrambled out of his chair, rushing to the window, peeling back the dusty lace curtains just a fraction of an inch.

"Oh God," Arthur gasped, his voice high-pitched with pure panic. "Oh God, no..."

May you like

"Who is it?" I asked, my hand instinctively dropping to hold Leo's shoulder.

"It's Thomas," Arthur whispered, turning back to us, his eyes wide with absolute terror. "It's Senator Vance. He has security cameras on the main road into town. His people saw your car plates, Emma. He knows you're back."
