Chapter 4 - The First Collapse-4

The bare living room became as silent as a grave.
Arthur’s briefcase slipped from his hand, slamming onto the hardwood floor with a dull thud. Valerie took a rapid step backward toward the front door, but the second officer smoothly shifted his weight, blocking her exit path.
“What... what is the meaning of this?” Arthur stammered, his voice barely a squeak. “There must be some mistake! I am a respected corporate consultant!”
The process server stepped forward, handing a thick folder of documents directly to Arthur, while handing a secondary subpoena to Eleanor.
“There is no mistake, Mr. Vance,” the lead officer replied coldly. “A formal criminal complaint was filed three hours ago by the District Attorney’s office, backed by forensic accounting records provided by Vanguard Pharmaceuticals and the trustees of Catherine Vance’s estate.”
Leo’s head whipped around toward his father. “My mother’s estate? What does my mother’s estate have to do with this?”
Eleanor tried to shove the subpoena into her coat pocket, her face contorted in sheer terror. “This is Sarah’s doing! She’s trying to destroy us! Officer, that woman is an unhinged, bitter ex-wife who is making up lies because we asked her to move out!”
“Ma’am, the signature on the authorization form that transferred $560,000 out of Leo Vance’s educational trust fund into Valkyrie Enterprises was analyzed by state forensic handwriting experts this morning,” the officer stated plainly. “It’s a confirmed forgery. Furthermore, the bank account receiving those funds is registered under the name of Valerie Miller—who is currently standing right behind you.”
Leo turned his glare toward Valerie, then slowly moved his eyes to his father. The illusion that Eleanor had spent six years building in the boy's mind—the narrative that Arthur was a noble, hardworking provider and I was an intrusive outsider—shattered into millions of sharp, painful pieces.
“You stole my mom’s money?” Leo whispered, taking a step toward Arthur, his voice trembling with a terrifying mixture of heartbreak and rage. “You took the money she left for my college and gave it to her?”
“Leo... son, please, listen to me!” Arthur pleaded, reaching his hands out desperately. “I was going to put it back! I was making investments to secure our future! Valerie was helping me manage the offshore portfolio!”
“You lied to me!” Leo shouted, his voice echoing off the bare walls. “Grandma told me Sarah was trying to take my inheritance! She told me Sarah hated me and wanted to spend my mother’s money on her own medical bills!”
Eleanor reached out to touch Leo’s arm. “Leo, darling, your grandmother was only trying to protect you—”
“Don't touch me!” Leo screamed, shoving Eleanor’s hand away. He backed away toward the front door, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “You all used me! You made me hate the only person in this house who actually cared if I lived or died!”
Without looking back at his sobbing grandmother or his stammering father, Leo spun around and bolted out of the apartment, his heavy sneakers pounding down the echoing stairwell.
“Leo! Wait!” Arthur cried out, attempting to run after his son, but the lead officer placed a firm, unyielding hand against Arthur’s chest.

“You’re not going anywhere, Mr. Vance,” the officer said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “You, Mrs. Vance, and Ms. Miller are coming with us to the precinct for booking.”
As the metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the bare room, Valerie began to scream at Arthur, blaming him for ruining her life, while Eleanor collapsed onto the cold floorboards, weeping pathetically into her hands.
