Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Distance-10

Two years after the trial.

The autumn leaves in upstate New York were brilliant shades of crimson and gold as my car turned down the long, quiet driveway of Columbia University’s residential campus.

Leo was now a sophomore, excelling at the top of his class, living in a bright student apartment, and managing the Catherine Vance Guardian Trust, which had already helped over forty young people recover stolen educational funds across the tri-state area.

I sat with Leo on a wooden bench overlooking the Hudson River, holding a warm cup of coffee while enjoying the crisp autumn breeze.

My phone buzzed softly in my coat pocket. It was a brief automated notification from the New York State Department of Corrections administrative portal.

I unlocked the screen and read the brief text:

Status Update: Inmate #884192 (Eleanor Vance). Location: Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Status: Application for Medical Parole Denied. Confinement Active.

I looked at the notification for three seconds.

I felt no rage. I felt no bitterness. The memory of the cold dining room on the Upper East Side, the arrogant insults, and the cruel ultimatum had lost every single shred of power over my life.

I swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and placed the phone back into my pocket forever.

“Was that from the court?” Leo asked softly, taking a sip of his tea.

“Just an automated system update,” I replied calmly, looking out over the glittering river. “Nothing that matters to us anymore.”

Leo smiled, resting his shoulder against mine. “I’m designing the plans for the new community shelter in Queens for my senior architecture project, Sarah. I want you to be the primary speaker at the ground-breaking ceremony next spring.”

“I would be honored, Leo,” I said softly, wrapping my arm around his shoulders.

The dark loop had been permanently broken. The concrete secrets had all been dragged into the unyielding light of justice. The people who had tried to exploit an innocent boy and discard a devoted woman were locked away in the shadows of their own making.

I took a deep, full breath of the clean autumn air, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of my heart.

The Upper East Side apartment was just a distant, forgotten memory. My life, my real family, and my freedom were right here in the light.
