Chapter 13 - The Voice across the Wire-13

An hour later, the secure prison line connected to the speakerphone sitting on my coffee table.

The crackle of heavy static filled the quiet room, followed by the raspy, shallow breathing of a dying man.

“Leo...?” Arthur’s voice came through the speaker, barely above a whisper, choked with weakness and pain. “Is... is that you, son?”

Leo sat straight on the sofa, his posture steady, his voice calm and grounded. “I’m here, Arthur.”

A long, shuddering gasp echoed from the hospital room across the wire. “Leo... oh God, Leo... I am so sorry... I was so stupid... Valerie... my mother... I destroyed everything...”

“You didn't destroy everything, Arthur,” Leo said clearly, his voice carrying a quiet authority that filled the room. “You destroyed yourself. You destroyed Eleanor, and you destroyed Valerie. But you didn't destroy me.”

Silence hung heavy on the line, broken only by Arthur’s faint, ragged weeping.

“Sarah saved me,” Leo continued softly. “She paid for my college, she protected my mother’s trust, and she taught me how to be a real man—the kind of man who doesn't steal from his family or lie to stay comfortable.”

“Is... is Sarah there with you?” Arthur sobbed weakly.

I stepped closer to the microphone, my tone neutral, calm, and free of malice. “I’m here, Arthur.”

“Sarah... please forgive me...” Arthur whispered, his voice fading rapidly. “I was a fool... you were the best thing that ever happened to my family...”

“I stopped looking for your apology four years ago, Arthur,” I said gently. “May you find peace.”

There was a long pause on the line, followed by the soft, rhythmic beep of a hospital heart monitor in the background, and then the quiet click of a corrections officer ending the call.

Leo locked the phone screen, leaned back against the sofa cushions, and let out a long, slow breath.

He didn't cry. He didn't shake. The final ghost of his father’s betrayal had dissolved into the cold winter air, leaving behind only the solid, unshakeable reality of his own strength.
