Chapter 7 - The Confession of the Mistress

7

Down the hall in Interrogation Room B, Vanessa Cole was experiencing her own terrifying reality check. Unlike Daniel, who had attempted to maintain a facade of corporate defiance, Vanessa had broken down within five minutes of sitting down across from the federal prosecutor.

Her mascara was smeared across her cheeks, her expensive resort dress stained with nervous sweat, and her manicured fingers clawing desperately at the edge of the stainless-steel table.

"I didn't know it was a federal crime!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Daniel told me the money was from his venture capital investments! He told me he was separating from Emma and that we were going to start a new life together in the islands!"

Across the table, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest with an expression of clinical detachment.

"Miss Cole, ignorance of the law is not a legal defense," Vance said calmly. "Especially when your corporate email address is listed as the primary administrative contact for Apex Holdings LLC, the exact shell corporation used to launder three million dollars in stolen funds."

"Daniel made me sign those papers!" Vanessa screamed, leaning forward. "He said if I didn't help him manage the accounts, he would cut me off! He manipulated me! He controlled every aspect of my life!"

"Is that why you blocked the hospital's emergency numbers on your phone?" Vance asked, sliding a printed cellular carrier log across the table. "Look at this timestamp, Miss Cole. At 2:14 AM, while little Sofia was in critical condition fighting for her breath, your phone received twenty-four consecutive calls from the pediatric intensive care unit. You didn't just ignore them. You manually forwarded them to voicemail and sent a text message to Daniel saying, 'Ignore the hospital spam, let's grab cocktails by the pool.'"

Vanessa stared at the paper, her breath catching in her throat. The words stared back at her like an unindicted accusation from her own conscience.

"I was selfish," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking into a ragged sob. "I just wanted to be happy. I didn't think the little girl was actually going to die... Daniel said she had a weak heart from birth, that it was only a matter of time anyway—"

Vance slammed his hand down on the table, the sharp crack silencing her instantly. "Do not speak her name," Vance warned, his eyes flashing with cold fury. "You and Daniel treated a dying child like an inconvenient scheduling conflict. Now, you will pay for every single decimal point of your greed."

He slid a plea agreement form across the table, along with a golden pen.

"Here are your choices, Miss Cole. You can sign this cooperation agreement right now, plead guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and testify against Daniel in exchange for a recommended sentence of eight years—or you can take your chances in front of a federal jury with the evidence Mrs. Whitmore compiled. Choose wisely."

Vanessa looked from the terrifying document to the cold metal pen. The luxury, the St. Lucia beaches, the designer dresses, the stolen pearl earrings—it had all vanished into thin air, leaving behind only the cold, unforgiving bars of federal custody.
