Chapter 3 - The Return to the House

3

The heavy oak front door swung open with a soft click, and Daniel stepped into the foyer, loosening his tie with an impatient, nervous jerk. Vanessa followed closely behind him, her designer sunglasses tucked into her hair, her eyes darting around the familiar hallway as if expecting a sudden ambush.

"See?" Daniel whispered, trying to project a confidence he clearly didn't feel. "The house is quiet. Everyone went home. Emma is probably upstairs crying in the guest room. We can pack our remaining clothes, grab the spare car keys, and be out of state before she even realizes what hit her."

"And go where, Daniel?" Vanessa snapped, dropping her handbag onto the marble console. "Your corporate credit cards are locked. My apartment lease was terminated last month because you promised we were buying that penthouse in Uptown. We have nowhere to go!"

"We have the offshore accounts," Daniel muttered, glancing toward the study door, which stood slightly ajar, a warm line of light spilling out onto the hardwood floor. "Once I get access to the primary server—"

"You won't be getting access to anything."

The voice came from the doorway of the study. Emma stood there, leaning casually against the doorframe, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater. Her expression was completely devoid of emotion—neither anger nor grief nor bitterness, just an absolute, chilling stillness.

Daniel swallowed hard, forcing a tight, conciliatory smile onto his face. "Emma. Thank goodness. Look, I know things looked... complicated at the cemetery. The flight delays, the stress of Sofia's passing... it all got mixed up. But we need to talk, just the two of us, rationally—"

"Rationally," Emma repeated, the word tasting like ash on her tongue. She pushed off the doorframe and walked slowly toward them. "Is that what you call ignoring one hundred and twenty-seven phone calls while your eight-year-old daughter was dying in a hospital bed?"

Vanessa bristled, defensive instincts overriding her fear. "My phone was stolen, Emma! How many times do I have to say it? I didn't even know Sofia had taken a turn for the worse until we landed at DFW!"

Emma stopped three feet in front of them. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to.

"Your phone wasn't stolen, Vanessa," Emma said quietly. "In fact, your phone pinged local cell towers in St. Lucia every single day at 8:15 AM, downloading high-definition video files from your iCloud backup. Furthermore, the cellular provider logs show that your device received fifty-nine emergency alerts from the hospital, marked with high-priority read receipts. You didn't miss the calls. You silenced them. Because a dying child didn't fit into your luxury vacation itinerary."

Vanessa’s breath hitched. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking ghostly beneath her tan. "You... you hacked my phone?"

"I didn't have to," Emma replied calmly. "You and Daniel were stupid enough to link your devices to the family cloud storage account so you could sync your vacation photos to the living room Apple TV. You left your digital footprints all over my house for three years."
