Chapter 5 - The Midnight Visitors

The sharp pounding on the front door reverberated through the quiet house like thunder. Vanessa froze mid-stride, her hands hovering inches from the desk, while Daniel’s head snapped toward the hallway with an expression of sheer, unadulterated panic.
"Who... who is that?" Daniel stammered, his bravado entirely evaporated.
Emma didn't answer. She calmly closed the binder, picked up her coffee cup, and took a slow, deliberate sip.
The pounding came again, louder this time, followed by a deep, authoritative voice echoing from the foyer. "Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the door!"
Daniel lunged toward the study window, desperately looking down at the front driveway. But as he pushed the blinds aside, his breath caught in his throat. Two unmarked black SUVs were parked horizontally across the circular drive, their emergency flashers painting the manicured lawn in pulsing bars of red and blue. Four federal agents in tactical windbreakers stood on the porch, their posture rigid and professional.
"No," Daniel whispered, turning back to face Emma with eyes wide with horror. "No, no, no. You didn't... Emma, you didn't call the feds? That's a federal indictment! That's twenty years in a maximum-security penitentiary!"
"I didn't call the FBI, Daniel," Emma corrected quietly, setting her coffee cup down with a soft click. "I called the special task force on white-collar financial fraud that my father helped fund five years ago. When you steal three million dollars from a publicly traded logistics conglomerate and use those funds to finance illicit interstate travel while neglecting a dying child, the federal government tends to take a very personal interest."
The front door downstairs creaked open as Uncle Arthur—who had stayed behind in the parlor downstairs—let the agents inside. Heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase, deliberate and relentless.
Vanessa collapsed into a chair, burying her face in her hands, her designer resort dress rustling loudly in the suffocating silence of the study. "Daniel... do something. Tell them it's a mistake. Tell them she's crazy!"
Daniel couldn't speak. His legs felt like lead. He stood frozen beside the desk as the study door swung wide open, and two federal agents stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the overhead lights.
"Daniel Whitmore?" the lead agent asked, his voice flat and absolute.
Daniel swallowed hard, unable to find his voice. He could only nod slowly.
May you like
"And Vanessa Cole?" the agent continued, turning his gaze toward the sobbing woman in the chair.
"You are both under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate laundering of embezzled corporate funds, and conspiracy to commit financial fraud. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
