Chapter 8 - The Arraignment

-1043-

The federal courthouse at Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse in Foley Square was imposing, its massive neoclassical granite columns towering over the frozen Manhattan streets.

It was 9:00 AM on January 2nd.

Maya was resting comfortably at home with Liam, surrounded by a mountain of fresh groceries, organic produce, and imported formula delivered directly to our door. I, however, stood in the public gallery of Courtroom 4B, watching the double doors at the front of the chamber swing open.

Four figures shuffled in, linked together by heavy steel belly chains and ankle cuffs.

Eleanor Miller walked first. Her silver hair was unstyled and disheveled, her expensive designer resort wear replaced by a drab, oversized beige federal detention jumpsuit. Her face was pale, sunken, and twisted into a mask of bitter, unyielding hatred. Behind her shuffled Chloe—crying softly, her mascara smeared across her cheeks—followed by Mark, who kept his head bowed low toward the scuffed linoleum floor, and Ethan Vance, whose arrogant swagger had completely evaporated into a posture of defeated slouching.

The federal marshals guided them toward the defense table, forcing them down onto the hard wooden benches.

Judge Robert Sterling—a no-nonsense magistrate with decades on the federal bench—adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses and looked down from the elevated mahogany dais.

"Case number 26-CR-409, United States versus Eleanor Miller, Chloe Vance, Mark Sterling, and Ethan Vance," the clerk announced in a crisp, monotone voice. "Charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen property, identity theft, and financial forgery."

"How do the defendants plead?" Judge Sterling asked.

Before their court-appointed public defenders could lean in, my mother Eleanor suddenly stood up—as much as the belly chain allowed—and pointed a shaky, trembling finger directly toward the public gallery where I sat alone in the front row.

"Your Honor! This is a complete miscarriage of justice!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceiling of the courtroom. "My son is a vindictive, tyrannical monster who orchestrated this entire false arrest just to punish his own family! He abandoned us! He abused us! He’s the one who committed fraud—"

"Quiet, ma'am!" Judge Sterling banged his gavel with a sound like a gunshot, cutting her off instantly. "You are represented by counsel. When I ask for a plea, your attorney speaks. One more outburst of contempt and I will have you gagged and removed from my courtroom."

Eleanor choked back a sob, her face turning a mottled, furious purple as she was forced back down onto the bench.

Her attorney stood up, nervously adjusting his tie. "Not guilty, Your Honor, on all counts. We request a reasonable bail consideration given our clients' lack of prior violent criminal history—"

"Denied," Judge Sterling interrupted flatly before the lawyer could even finish his sentence. "The defendants are charged with a sophisticated, premeditated multi-jurisdictional financial fraud scheme targeting vulnerable victims, involving the liquidation of real property via forged legal instruments and offshore asset concealment. Furthermore, their attempt to flee and conceal stolen assets upon initial law enforcement contact demonstrates an extreme flight risk. All defendants are remanded to the Metropolitan Correctional Center without bail pending trial."

Bang.

The gavel fell with finality.

Chloe let out a piercing wail, burying her face in her cuffed hands as the federal marshals stepped forward, grabbed them by their shoulders, and hauled them away through the secure back doors of the courtroom.

As Eleanor was dragged past the gallery, she turned her head, fixing me with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You’ll rot for this, David," she hissed through her teeth. "You’ll never know peace!"

"I already have," I whispered back, standing up slowly and buttoning my suit jacket.
