Chapter 6 - The Miami Raid

-1041-
A secure live feed from the Miami-Dade tactical unit was piped directly onto the large wall-mounted monitor in the FBI conference room.
The split-screen showed body-cam footage from four different federal agents and local detectives moving down the carpeted, gold-trimmed hallway of the thirtieth floor at the Setai hotel in South Beach. It was 8:15 AM Miami time. The morning sun was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the luxury resort, illuminating floating dust motes in the opulent hallway.
"Breaching in three, two, one..." a tactical officer's voice crackled through the speaker.
BOOM.
The reinforced double doors of the penthouse suite blew inward with a deafening crash, splintering the mahogany frame.
"FBI! Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"
The tactical team swarmed into the suite like a wave of dark green armor. Chaos erupted instantly inside the expensive room.
On screen feed two, I watched my mother Eleanor leap up from the white velvet chaise lounge, screeching at the top of her lungs, her champagne flute flying out of her hand and shattering against an imported marble coffee table.
"What is the meaning of this?! Do you know who I am?! Get those filthy hands off me!" Eleanor shrieked, thrashing wildly as two federal agents pinned her arms behind her back and slapped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
On feed three, Chloe was sobbing hysterically, huddled on a king-sized bed wrapped in a silk bathrobe, while an agent calmly read her Miranda rights. Mark was sprawled face-down on the Persian rug in the foyer, screaming that his shoulder was dislocated while an officer zip-tied his wrists behind his back.
And on feed four, the camera panned into the master walk-in closet, where Ethan Vance was caught red-handed stuffing stacks of hundred-dollar bills and Maya’s stolen diamond and emerald heirloom jewelry box into a leather garment bag.
" Ethan Vance, you’re under arrest for interstate wire fraud, conspiracy, and identity theft," an agent announced coldly, shoving Ethan against the teakwood shelving and locking the cuffs into place.
As the suspects were hauled out of the suite one by one—their expensive resort clothing rumpled, their faces flushed with absolute, unmasked terror—the live feed caught a clear shot of Eleanor staring directly into the hallway security camera. Her eyes were wide, bulging with frantic fury, her mouth working silently as she realized whose name was on the warrant that had just landed her in federal custody.
Agent Sterling clicked the remote, cutting the video feed to black.
He turned back to me, sliding a laminated evidence inventory sheet across the table. "All recovered assets, including the contents of your safe and your wife’s jewelry, are currently being cataloged by our Miami field office and will be transported back to New York under armed guard within twenty-four hours. Furthermore, the fraudulent real estate transfer has been formally flagged and frozen by the New York State land registry office. Title ownership remains 100% in your name, Mr. Miller. Vance & Sterling’s contract has been nullified as an act of fraud."
I let out a long, slow breath—the first truly deep breath I had taken since unlocking my front door twelve hours ago.
"Thank you, Agent Sterling," I said, standing up and extending my hand. "What happens next?"
May you like
"Next? Your mother and her associates will be extradited back to New York for arraignment within forty-eight hours," Sterling said, shaking my hand firmly. "They’ll be facing a federal magistrate judge tomorrow morning. Given the interstate nature of the crime, the falsification of federal legal instruments, and the exploitation of a vulnerable postpartum victim, bail will likely be denied due to high flight risk."
"Good," I said coldly. "Let them experience what a cold cell feels like."
