Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes in Manhattan

-1043-

The federal building at 26 Federal Plaza in lower Manhattan was a towering monolith of gray concrete and mirrored glass. At 7:30 AM on New Year’s Day, the plaza outside was completely deserted, swept by a bitter wind blowing off New York Harbor.

Inside the seventh-floor conference room of the FBI’s White-Collar Crime division, the air smelled of stale coffee, printer toner, and the metallic tang of electronics running at full capacity.

Special Agent Marcus Sterling—a tall, impeccably groomed man in his late forties with sharp graying temples and a crisp charcoal suit—closed the manila folder in front of him and looked across the mahogany table at me.

"Well, Mr. Miller," Agent Sterling said, his voice measured and professional. "In my nineteen years with the Bureau, I’ve seen some exceptionally brazen family fraud schemes. But forging a power of attorney, executing a below-market real estate transfer to a conspirator’s shell company while the primary homeowner is abroad, and looting a safe while a postpartum woman recovers from surgery in the same apartment? That ranks in the top tier of sheer, unadulterated stupidity."

"They believed they were untouchable," I said, sitting rigidly in the chair with my hands resting flat on the table. "My mother has operated with impunity for decades, shielding herself behind the excuse of 'family loyalty' while exploiting everyone around her."

"Well, her impunity just hit a brick wall," Agent Sterling said, tapping the edge of the folder. "Thanks to the high-definition cloud footage you pulled from the building's security cameras, the digital audit trail of the fraudulent escrow transfer, and the physical documents you recovered from your safe, our cybercrime unit traced the entire transaction flow by 4:00 AM. Vance & Sterling Acquisitions LLC is not a legitimate real estate firm. It’s a registered shell corporation with zero commercial assets, funded entirely through offshore accounts originating in the Cayman Islands—accounts that your mother, Eleanor Miller, has signatory access to."

He reached out and slid a set of printed documents across the table.

"We obtained emergency federal search and seizure warrants signed by a magistrate judge an hour ago," Sterling continued, his eyes locking onto mine. "Furthermore, because the conspirators crossed state lines—executing a fraudulent financial transaction from New York while attempting to liquidate assets from a resort in Miami, Florida—this officially constitutes interstate wire fraud and grand larceny across federal jurisdictions."

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw an encrypted notification from the hospital: Maya and Liam were resting comfortably, her fever had completely broken, and her white blood cell count was returning to normal.

"What about the arrest warrants?" I asked, looking back up at Sterling.

"They’re active right now," Sterling said, checking his watch. "Local units of the Miami-Dade Police Department, acting in coordination with our FBI field office in Miami, are executing a no-knock entry on the penthouse suite at the Setai hotel as we speak. Ethan Vance, your mother Eleanor, your sister Chloe, and her husband Mark are currently being detained."

"Detained?" I raised an eyebrow. "Not arrested?"

"Arrested, processed, and slapped with federal charges that carry a combined maximum sentence of thirty-five years," Sterling corrected with a faint, grim smile. "Mr. Vance thought he was executing a clever real estate flip. Instead, he just handed us a blueprint for a multi-layered financial conspiracy that also triggers federal tax evasion charges, since none of those offshore shell funds were ever reported to the IRS."

He stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Now, Mr. Miller. If you’d like to witness the culmination of your family's little real estate seminar, I suggest we head down to the processing facility. Your presence will be required to officially identify the recovered assets, including your family heirlooms and your safe contents, which our agents are currently confiscating from Mr. Vance’s personal Manhattan office."
