PART 9: THE CHILD PROJECT GENESIS COULDN'T FIND

The lights died instantly.

One second the office glowed with warm yellow light.

The next, darkness swallowed everything.

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

The estate's emergency generators should have activated automatically.

They didn't.

Alexander immediately understood why.

Someone had shut them down.

From the inside.

"Everyone stay away from the windows."

His voice cut through the darkness.

Sharp.

Urgent.

Dangerous.

The tone of a man who had spent decades surviving enemies.

Not a businessman.

Not a billionaire.

A survivor.

Lily's heart hammered.

She could barely see anything.

Only shadows.

Shapes.

Breathing.

Then Maxwell grabbed her shoulder.

"It's okay."

The words sounded reassuring.

But his voice betrayed him.

It wasn't okay.

Not even close.

Outside, three black SUVs sat motionless near the front gate.

Rain began falling.

Slow at first.

Then harder.

The vehicles remained still.

Waiting.

Watching.

Like predators circling prey.

Arthur peered through the darkness.

"Who are they?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Because he already knew.

Or at least suspected.

And the possibility terrified him.

Something he hadn't felt in years.

Then the estate's backup security monitor flickered to life.

One screen.

Just one.

Enough.

Alexander rushed toward it.

The camera showed the front gate.

Three SUVs.

Twelve people.

Men and women.

Uniform movements.

Military precision.

No panic.

No hesitation.

No wasted motion.

Professionals.

Maxwell felt sick.

"Police?"

Alexander shook his head.

"Worse."

The answer hung heavily in the room.

Because nobody knew what could possibly be worse.

Then one figure stepped from the lead vehicle.

A woman.

Tall.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

Black coat.

Confident posture.

And the moment Alexander saw her face...

His blood turned cold.

"No."

Maxwell looked at him.

"What?"

Alexander stared at the screen.

Unable to believe it.

Unable to process it.

Because the woman standing outside should have been dead.

For twenty-two years.

Arthur suddenly gasped.

"My God..."

Maxwell turned toward him.

"You know her?"

Arthur looked like he had seen a ghost.

Because maybe he had.

The woman approached the camera.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Then looked directly into the lens.

As if she knew exactly where they were watching from.

Her lips formed a single word.

One name.

Lily.

The room froze.

"Who is she?"

Maxwell demanded.

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

Because neither Alexander nor Arthur wanted to say it aloud.

Finally Arthur whispered:

"Dr. Evelyn Hart."

Silence.

The name meant nothing to Lily.

Nothing to Ethan.

Nothing to Maxwell.

But Alexander looked horrified.

Truly horrified.

Twenty-five years earlier, Dr. Evelyn Hart had been considered one of the greatest scientific minds in the world.

Brilliant.

Respected.

Celebrated.

Governments competed for her expertise.

Corporations fought for her attention.

Universities offered fortunes to recruit her.

Then she vanished.

Without warning.

Without explanation.

Without a trace.

Officially, she died in a laboratory accident.

At least that was the story.

The story was a lie.

Alexander finally spoke.

"She created Genesis."

The room went silent.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly Project Genesis felt real.

Not an idea.

Not a rumor.

Not a conspiracy.

A person.

A creator.

Standing outside their gates.

Then something strange happened.

The security monitor crackled.

The image distorted.

Static filled the screen.

And suddenly Dr. Hart appeared much closer.

Too close.

The camera hadn't zoomed.

She had moved.

Impossible.

No human could have crossed that distance so quickly.

Even Alexander stared.

Confused.

Disturbed.

Then Dr. Hart smiled.

And spoke.

The sound emerged directly from the office speakers.

Not from the camera.

Not from a phone.

From inside the estate.

"Good evening, Alexander."

Every person in the room jumped.

The woman continued.

Her voice calm.

Almost pleasant.

"I've spent nineteen years searching for Elizabeth."

Lily felt Maxwell's hand tighten protectively around her shoulder.

"And now..."

Dr. Hart smiled.

"...she's finally home."

The monitor went black.

A moment later every window in the estate shattered simultaneously.

Glass exploded inward.

Rain poured inside.

Screams echoed through the hallway.

Security alarms activated.

Red emergency lights flashed.

Chaos erupted.

Maxwell immediately pulled Lily behind a desk.

Ethan ducked beside them.

Arthur grabbed a fireplace poker.

The closest thing he had to a weapon.

Alexander didn't move.

Because he noticed something nobody else saw.

Among the shattered glass lay a small metal capsule.

About the size of a thumb.

It had rolled across the floor.

Stopping directly in front of him.

A message.

Alexander carefully picked it up.

Twisted the cap.

Removed a folded piece of paper.

Only four words appeared.

SHE IS NOT HUMAN.

The room became silent.

Maxwell stared.

Arthur stared.

Ethan stared.

Lily stared.

Nobody understood.

Except Alexander.

Because twenty-eight years earlier...

Before Genesis disappeared.

Before Evelyn Hart vanished.

Before Rebecca Blackwood was born.

He had stolen a document.

A single page.

One page he never fully understood.

Until now.

His face slowly lost all color.

"No."

Maxwell turned.

"What?"

Alexander looked toward Lily.

The little girl who had saved Ethan.

The child who slept beneath bridges.

The granddaughter Eleanor loved.

The orphan everyone believed they understood.

Then he whispered something so shocking that nobody could breathe.

"Rebecca wasn't hiding Lily."

Silence.

"She was hiding Genesis."

The room stopped.

Lily stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander closed his eyes.

Because the truth sounded insane.

Impossible.

Monstrous.

But after everything he had seen...

Everything he had learned...

Everything Eleanor had hidden...

There was only one explanation left.

Project Genesis had never been technology.

Never data.

Never information.

Project Genesis had been a child.

And somehow...

For seventeen years...

Nobody realized that child was Lily.

Outside, Dr. Evelyn Hart stood in the rain watching the estate.

For the first time in decades...

She smiled.

Not because she had found Elizabeth.

But because the final phase was about to begin.

And hidden deep beneath the estate...

Far below the mansion...

Far below the vaults...

Far below every secret the Blackwoods thought they knew...

An ancient server suddenly powered on.

A green light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then remained steady.

Across the monitor appeared a message that had not been seen in seventeen years:

GENESIS SUBJECT 01 DETECTED

ACTIVATION PROTOCOL INITIATED

And somewhere inside Lily's mind...

May you like

A memory she never knew existed began to awaken.
