PART 8: THE GIRL WHO NEVER EXISTED

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody blinked.

Nobody breathed.

The photograph trembled in Alexander's hands.

The hospital bracelet remained visible.

Clear.

Undeniable.

ELIZABETH BLACKWOOD.

Lily stared at it.

Then stared at Alexander.

Then Maxwell.

Then back at the photograph.

A strange sensation spread through her chest.

Not shock.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

The terrifying feeling that everything she believed about herself was collapsing at once.

"What does this mean?"

Her voice sounded small.

Fragile.

Like the frightened seven-year-old girl who once slept beneath bridges.

Nobody answered immediately.

Because nobody knew how.

How do you tell a child that her entire life may have been built on a lie?

Maxwell carefully sat down.

His legs suddenly felt weak.

Because one thought kept repeating inside his head.

If Lily was Elizabeth Blackwood...

Then who had hidden her?

And why?

More importantly...

Who had spent years making sure she remained invisible?

Alexander broke the silence.

"We need to see what's on the flash drive."

Everyone looked toward the small silver device lying inside the metal box.

The object suddenly felt dangerous.

Like a loaded weapon.

Or a ticking bomb.

Something Eleanor had buried because the truth inside was too explosive to leave in the open.

Twenty minutes later they gathered in Maxwell's private office.

The flash drive clicked into a laptop.

A single folder appeared.

No password.

No encryption.

Only one title.

FOR LILY.

Maxwell felt his stomach tighten.

Eleanor rarely did anything without purpose.

If she left this specifically for Lily...

Then she had been planning this revelation for years.

Perhaps decades.

Alexander opened the folder.

Dozens of files appeared.

Photographs.

Scanned documents.

Letters.

Video recordings.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Court filings.

And one file labeled:

START HERE.

Silence filled the room.

Then Maxwell clicked.

The screen flickered.

Eleanor appeared.

Older than in the photograph.

But younger than the Eleanor they remembered before her death.

She looked directly into the camera.

Directly into the future.

As though she knew this exact moment would happen.

"Hello, Lily."

The room froze.

Because hearing Eleanor's voice after so many years felt almost impossible.

Lily stared at the screen.

Unable to look away.

Eleanor smiled softly.

"If you're watching this, then I was right."

She paused.

Her expression grew serious.

"Which means the people who wanted you hidden have finally lost."

Nobody spoke.

The only sound came from the laptop speakers.

Eleanor continued.

"Before I explain who you are..."

Her eyes softened.

"...I need to explain who your mother was."

Lily leaned forward.

Instantly.

Every muscle in her body tensed.

Because nobody had ever talked about her mother.

Not really.

Only fragments.

Questions without answers.

Mysteries wrapped inside other mysteries.

A photograph appeared beside Eleanor.

A young woman.

Dark hair.

Kind eyes.

A familiar smile.

Lily's breath caught.

Because she recognized that smile.

She saw it every morning in the mirror.

"This is Rebecca."

Eleanor's voice trembled.

"Your mother."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Lily stared.

Unable to speak.

Unable to think.

For the first time in her life...

She was looking at her mother.

"Rebecca was my daughter."

The room froze.

Maxwell's eyes widened.

Alexander stopped breathing.

Arthur removed his glasses.

Because suddenly everything changed.

Everything.

Lily blinked.

"What?"

The word barely escaped her lips.

Eleanor continued.

"Rebecca Blackwood."

Another pause.

"My child."

The implications struck everyone at once.

Rebecca Blackwood.

Eleanor's daughter.

Which meant...

Lily wasn't merely connected to the Blackwoods.

She belonged to them.

By blood.

Maxwell slowly lowered himself into a chair.

Because if Rebecca was Eleanor's daughter...

Then Lily was Eleanor's granddaughter.

Which made Lily...

Family.

Not metaphorically.

Not emotionally.

Literally.

The video continued.

"Rebecca disappeared twenty years ago."

Alexander whispered:

"Oh my God."

Because he remembered.

Everyone remembered.

The scandal.

The missing person case.

The headlines.

The investigations.

The rumors.

One of the greatest mysteries in Blackwood history.

A young woman vanished without a trace.

Never found.

Never explained.

Eventually forgotten.

Or so everyone thought.

Eleanor's eyes filled with sadness.

"The public was told she ran away."

A bitter laugh escaped her.

"That was a lie."

Another photograph appeared.

This one showed Rebecca holding a newborn baby.

Tiny.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket.

The date shocked everyone.

Because the baby had been born only weeks before Rebecca vanished.

Lily felt dizzy.

The room seemed to tilt.

Her heart pounded louder and louder.

Because somewhere deep inside...

She already knew.

Before Eleanor even said it.

She knew.

The older woman looked directly into the camera.

Then spoke the words that shattered Lily's world forever.

"That baby was you."

Silence.

Total.

Absolute.

Silence.

Lily stopped breathing.

Not literally.

But it felt close.

The photograph remained on the screen.

The newborn.

The bracelet.

The smiling mother.

The impossible truth.

Tears slowly filled Lily's eyes.

"My mom..."

The words cracked.

"...held me?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Every day."

Lily started crying.

Quietly at first.

Then harder.

Because children who grow up alone often carry a secret wound.

A question they never stop asking.

Did anyone love me?

Did anyone want me?

Did anyone fight for me?

Now she finally had an answer.

Yes.

Her mother had loved her.

Deeply.

Completely.

Enough to risk everything.

But the story wasn't over.

Not even close.

Because Eleanor's expression suddenly darkened.

And everyone immediately sensed something worse was coming.

Much worse.

"The reason Rebecca disappeared..."

The older woman swallowed.

"...was because she discovered something hidden inside Blackwood Industries."

Maxwell frowned.

Another secret?

Another conspiracy?

After everything?

Eleanor nodded as though answering his thoughts.

"The intelligence network wasn't the real secret."

Arthur's face drained of color.

"What?"

Even Alexander looked stunned.

Because the intelligence network had nearly destroyed governments.

How could there be something bigger?

Eleanor answered.

"There was another project."

The room became silent.

"A project so dangerous that even members of our family were never allowed to know it existed."

Maxwell felt cold.

Very cold.

Because suddenly he remembered something.

A name.

An old name.

A phrase buried deep inside childhood memories.

Something he once overheard his father whisper.

Something he never understood.

Eleanor spoke again.

"The project was called Genesis."

The laptop speakers crackled.

Arthur dropped his glasses.

Alexander stood up.

And Maxwell's face turned completely white.

Because after thirty years...

He finally remembered where he had heard that name before.

And why his father looked terrified when he said it.

Then Eleanor delivered the sentence that changed everything once again.

The sentence that explained why Rebecca vanished.

Why Lily was hidden.

Why people kept searching.

Why secrets kept surfacing.

Why none of this was truly over.

"Rebecca didn't disappear because she was a Blackwood."

A pause.

A painful pause.

Then:

"Rebecca disappeared because she learned what Genesis created."

The video suddenly ended.

The screen went black.

And at that exact moment...

Every light in the estate went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Outside, somewhere beyond the windows, a car engine stopped.

Then another.

Then another.

Alexander rushed to the curtain.

His blood turned to ice.

Three black SUVs had just entered the estate gates.

And painted across the side of each vehicle was a symbol nobody had seen in decades.

A symbol believed destroyed forever.

A symbol connected to Project Genesis.

Someone had found Lily.

And this time...

They weren't coming for the Blackwood fortune.

May you like

They were coming for Elizabeth Blackwood herself.
