Part 2: The Blackwood Legacy

Maxwell didn't speak for a long, agonizing moment. His eyes weren't looking at the expensive phone, but rather at a unique, jagged silver ring Lily wore on a thin, frayed string around her neck—a ring she had rescued from the house fire that took her grandmother. It bore the crest of the Blackwood family foundation, an antique piece that had belonged to Maxwell’s late older sister, who had vanished into the foster care system decades ago after a family tragedy.
"Where did you get that ring, Lily?" Maxwell asked, his voice dropping into a breathless, trembling whisper that completely stunned the private security details who had just caught up to him.
"It was my grandmother's," Lily said defensively, tucking the silver piece back beneath the collar of her black dress, her eyes darting toward the exits. "She told me never to lose it. Sir, I have to go now."
"No, you don't," Maxwell said, standing up with an unyielding authority that was entirely devoid of malice. He wrapped his own heavy wool trench coat around her small shoulders, lifting both her and Ethan into his arms. "You’re coming with us."
Within twenty minutes, the black Rolls-Royce arrived at the Blackwood estate, a sprawling, heavily guarded penthouse overlooking the Upper East Side. While a private medical team immediately rushed Ethan to the residential wing to treat his hypothermia, Maxwell called his chief of corporate intelligence, Arthur Vance, into his private study.
"I want a full forensic DNA sequence run on the hair fibers left on that coat, Arthur," Maxwell commanded, staring out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the glittering Manhattan skyline. "And track down the agency responsible for hiring Ethan's caretaker, Victoria Cross. She left my disabled son alone in a freezing park for eight hours. Find out who paid her to walk away."
By 3:00 a.m., the data began to pour in, revealing a calculated corporate conspiracy that shook the billionaire to his core.
The DNA results confirmed what Maxwell’s heart already suspected: Lily Tucker wasn't a random homeless girl. She was his biological niece, the legal heiress to the dormant half of the Blackwood family trust. After the fire that killed her grandmother, corrupt administrators within the state group home system had purposefully falsified her records, listing her as deceased so they could quietly funnel her monthly trust dividends into an offshore account.
But the digital trail didn't stop at the state line.
Arthur Vance slid a decrypted tablet across the mahogany desk. "Sir, we intercepted the bank accounts linked to Victoria Cross. The wire transfer she received to abandon Ethan in Central Park didn't come from a rival tech firm. It originated from an offshore shell company managed by your own stepbrother, Julian Blackwood."
Julian had been positioning himself to take control of Blackwood Industries for years, using Ethan’s physical vulnerability as leverage. By eliminating Ethan and keeping Lily hidden in the shadows of the streets, Julian would have been next in line to inherit the entire corporate empire.

Maxwell’s face turned into a cold, terrifying mask of absolute venom. His stepbrother had weaponized the vulnerability of a disabled boy and the tragic displacement of a young girl just to secure a boardroom majority.
"He thought the streets would swallow her," Maxwell whispered, his jaw locking into a rigid line of finality. "He thought a quiet, homeless child was invisible. But she's a Blackwood. And tomorrow morning, we liquidate his entire existence."
