Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Snow-8

Thirty-six hours later, the snow was falling heavily over the majestic peaks of the Austrian Alps.

A black high-speed armored convoy carrying Special Agent Marcus Reed, four elite Swiss tactical operatives, and me wound its way up the narrow, winding mountain road toward Viktor Voronin’s castle in Kitzbühel.

Twelve hours earlier, in Geneva, we had opened Claire’s private bank box.

Inside, precisely as she had written in her journal, were three sealed cryogenic vials containing her blood work and two unused ampoules of Compound 77, complete with Dr. Aris Thorne’s personal laboratory serial numbers stamped on the glass.

The Swiss Federal Prosecutor had signed an emergency international arrest warrant within forty-five minutes of receiving the chemical analysis.

Now, backed by a joint task force of Austrian Federal Police and Interpol tactical strike units, we were executing the raid on Voronin’s mountain stronghold.

Above us, the heavy rotors of three stealth transport helicopters chopped through the icy night air, their searchlights slicing through the swirling blizzard like white blades.

"Convoys one and two are in position at the lower gates," Reed reported through his tactical headset, checking the display on his wrist monitor. "The Austrian Cobra unit is executing the airborne breach on the upper courtyard in thirty seconds."

I sat in the back of the armored vehicle, wearing a heavy tactical winter coat over a Kevlar vest. In my hands was my biometric sidearm. My face was cold, calm, and utterly focused.

"Nathan," Reed said, looking at me with concern. "Remember our agreement. You stay behind the tactical shield team. We need Thorne alive to testify against Voronin’s global network."

"I promised I wouldn't kill him, Marcus," I replied smoothly. "I didn't promise I wouldn't make him look me in the eye when he falls."

A deafening explosion echoed from the top of the mountain ridge as the Austrian tactical team blew the heavy iron gates of the castle courtyard with breaching charges.

Our armored convoy accelerated through the splintered gates, pulling into the massive stone courtyard surrounded by high, snow-dusted battlements.

Automated gunfire erupted from the upper balconies as Voronin’s private mercenaries attempted to repel the assault. But the Interpol strike team, supported by sniper teams in the hovering helicopters, returned fire with overwhelming, precision force, neutralizing the outer defenses within ninety seconds.

We stepped out of the armored vehicle into the freezing wind, moving behind the tactical shield operators as they breached the castle’s massive wooden double doors.

Inside, the castle was a grand, cavernous display of stolen art, dark oak paneling, and marble fireplaces.

Mercenaries lay disarmed and bound across the floor as tactical teams systematically cleared room after room.

We moved directly toward the lower laboratory wing—a state-of-the-art biological facility built into the mountain rock beneath the castle foundation.

When we blew the reinforced blast doors to the main lab, we found Dr. Aris Thorne standing near an industrial incinerator, frantically throwing armfuls of paper research files into the roaring flames.

"FREEZE! FBI! PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" Reed shouted, pointing his carbine at Thorne's chest.

Thorne froze. He was a thin, balding man in his late fifties, wearing a white lab coat covered in sweat and soot. He slowly raised his trembling hands into the air, his face pale with utter terror.

"Don't shoot!" Thorne gasped, his voice high-pitched and shaking. "I’m a civilian scientist! I was forced to work here! Voronin held me hostage!"

I stepped out from behind the tactical shield team, walking slowly toward him through the clearing smoke.

When Thorne saw my face, his jaw dropped. His hands shook even harder, his eyes wide with horror as if he were looking at a ghost.

"Nathan... Caldwell..." Thorne stammered, stepping back until his spine hit the edge of the metal lab counter. "You... you were supposed to be in Aspen..."

"I was in Aspen, Dr. Thorne," I said, my voice dead calm, echoing off the concrete walls of the lab. "I was home with my daughters. The daughters you tried to leave motherless three years ago."

"I didn't have a choice!" Thorne wept hysterically, dropping to his knees on the concrete floor. "Voronin threatened my family! He said if I didn't synthesize Compound 77 for Claire, he would kill my children!"

I stopped two feet away from him, looking down at the coward who had murdered my wife with a needle and a smile.

"Claire trusted you," I said softly. "She sat in your office every week, terrified, holding my hand, believing you were trying to save her life. And every week, you injected her with poison."

May you like

"Forgive me..." Thorne sobbed, burying his face in his hands. "Please... forgive me..."

"Forgiveness is between you and God, Dr. Thorne," I said quietly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from my vest and tossing them onto the floor in front of him. "My job is just to make sure you spend the rest of your life in a windowless cell thinking about her face."
